A former Alabama Department of Corrections officer faces up to 10 years in federal prison for failing to stop a subordinate officer from beating an incarcerated man in 2019. Willie Burks, 42, was found guilty in a jury trial of depriving an inmate of his civil rights. At least three other officers involved in the incident have pleaded guilty and await sentencing. Burks will be sentenced in November. According to court documents, prisoners identified as C.H. and C.R. were taken to an observation room on the morning of Feb. 16, 2019, on suspicion that the two had retrieved contraband left at the Elmore prison fence line.
