After David Mears emerged from behind the chain-link fence that surrounds the Limestone Correctional prison in February, he returned home to a changing city.
Traffic is heavier, and thousands of people are moving into Madison, a suburb just west of Huntsville. New businesses are opening in Huntsville and construction crews are widening Interstate 565. Madison Square Mall is gone, replaced by a new mixed-use development featuring Top Golf, a Trader Joe’s grocery store that’s under construction, and a yet-to-be-built amphitheater.
But it wasn’t just his hometown that changed during the more than three years that Mears was incarcerated for theft and drug possession. The COVID-19 pandemic transformed the world.
