So are these passages about covid or about expanding the government here in the United States over the longer term . You spent a lot of time looking at the economy and covid. So what is your reaction to this 1. 9 trillion bill as we said went through with looks like no republican support . The most important word we heard is from janet yellen. It was scarring, permanent scarring. Id like to take you back in a time machine. We go to the oval office in july of 2020. Im sitting there with the president and the other advisers. We were very much wanting to pass a 2 trillion bill because we understood at that time if we didnt do that, we were likely to lose the heart and soul of our economy, which is small business. Nancy pelosi made essentially a devils bargain, which was to deny the president a victory on the Stimulus Package on the bet that it would lose him the election. She got that wish, but the problem we face now and you can see it in the data, that she saddled the Biden Administration that i believe in 2021 will significantly underperform and lead to a stagnation. Bill so you think the timing of this you go back to the political nature. 68 of americans support this Stimulus Plan by the Biden Administration. Everybody is looking forward to the money that will come with it. Of course, theres a price to be paid for that as well. You think the timing is essential . You think that ultimately were going to look back and say if it happened last summer it would have worked but this money will not . Yes, with this proviso. If we had done it six months ago, we could have saved hundreds of thousands of small businesses. The problem, martha, is that theres no turn on, turn off switch for small businesses. Once they go away, theyre gone. So what were facing is this twin scarring. We have on the one and this massive loss of small businesses. On the other hand, we had the structural problem in our major metropolitan areas where the virus has hit the three main pillars of every major metropolitan area. Its the mass transit, the commercial Office Buildings and the sports and entertainment districts. So if you look at the labor stats that came with todays numbers, its alarming in the sense that we have Something Like 10 Million People unemployed. Yet theres Labor Shortages in selected sectors. What that means is theres what is called structural unemployment. The people who are working in restaurants and Service Sectors cant necessarily make that bridge to these other sectors. So what well see is Slower Growth with higher wage inflation, which is a stag inflation scenario. I noted that biden was pimping moodys as one of their supporters of their bill. So theyre very democratic. 2021 is likely to be the year of the big short in the Financial Markets and underperformance. Its important that we get this bill passed, but we have scarring that were going to have to deal with. I think in a general way were starting to understand the importance of balance again. Six, seven months ago, i remember when andrew cuomo said to your earlier point, no measure, no matter how draconian could be deemed unwise if it saves but a single life. I got a lot of flak when he said that because i did jump in and i said wait a second. That is a safety first way of thinking. Deep down were not a safety first society. We can be for short periods. But eventually people get bored of being terrified. Now were starting to see the price of safety is devastating. What is happening right now in my view in the Energy Industry is really the thing that i think we ought to be focused on because there feels to me and feels to a lot of people i talk to on a daytoday basis a concerted effort to wage a kind of war against energy. Its not a war we can win especially with regard to fossil fuels and all of the jobs that are wrapped up in that industry. I dont mean to sound like an apologist, but i know of no Greater Investor in alternative energy than the fossil fuel industry. If we dont get people that wear yoga pants and rely on plastic keyboards to understand the relationship that we all have and the way that everything is connected with all elements of our work force, were going to keep pushing that boulder up the hill. Bill yeah, a lot of great points. One i want to circle back to. This issue of safety. One of the phrases that we hear a lot is, when its safe, we can go back to doing that. I think people in many parts of the country have approached this that way and have done so pretty successfully. But theres a great divide on that. Winning the vote and removing newsome from office would be tougher. Newsome has faced criticism over the pandemic and in particular restrictions on businesses and the continued closure of many schools in the state. As a result, his Job Approval Numbers have dived. A new pole gives him a rating of 46 down from 64 . 48 disapprove of the job hes doing up from 36 in september. On the critical question of whether they would vote to recall the governor, 36 of registered voters question said yes. 45 said no. Albeit with a 19 undecided. The recall petition needs under 1. 5 million signatures to trigger the recall vote. Its getting close according to leaders and those that would run against newsome, including former san diego mayor Kevin Fulkner are bullish about the process. I believe this will qualify and well be in a recall situation here very soon. And money is now flowing in including backers of former President Trump. Groups supporting the recall she they will within days hit 3. 5 million raised. Newsome seems unconcerned about the effort. His backers point out a former mayor of san diego, a republican businessman with little name recognition hardly match up to the celebrity and crossparty appeal of Arnold Schwarzenegger that ousted gray davis in the last recall vote in 2003. What do you think about the likelihood of a recall vote and you think newsome would survive it . Having led the 2003 effort, im aware that this is not a vote about who might replace him. Its a vote of right direction, Wrong Direction. Its clear that Wrong Direction is taking the larger share in a strong way as to his handling of the government, not just the vaccine issue, but issues about the 11 billion lost to unemployment, cancelling of those benefits of those entitled to them and a myriad of other activities including his decision to lock down people and violating his own rules when it comes to face mask protection. All of these create a no confidence likelihood once this becomes validated. But do you think in reality theres any likelihood that he would lose his job of governor of california based on that . Theres a likelihood. Once it qualifies he isnt running against a candidate. Hes running against the question of right direction, Wrong Direction. The Democratic Party will have no major candidate on his side or as they did in 2003 where they reason the Lieutenant Governor who had no option to the Wrong Direction and as a result Arnold Schwarzenegger beat him. Again, its not a question of who runs to replace him. Its a question of right direction, Wrong Direction. A candidate will run that believes in the right direction and he will be a referendum on whether his current direction is wrong for california where people and companies are fleeing the state. Martha yeah, its this is a young senior in high school who very much wanted to play the Football Season this year talking about why that is so important to him and to his family as well. None of the kids have gotten the play this year. Watch this. Give us a chance to play. This is what a lot of students, their only chance to help family out. Its also clear that governor newsome has started to say i think under be a ton of pressure that he wants things to go in that direction as well. There was an oped in the l. A. Times today that is asking him to put more behind it than just wishes and hopes. It says newsomes reassurance about safety only accomplishes so much. The state needs to back that up with requirements for schools to reopen when covid19 rates have fallen to safe levels. Rather than try to sweet talk them into it. An interesting point. It is. One of the critical issues. Either governor newsome will take on the powerful Teachers Union and make them allow and encourage and require teachers if they can safely return to the classroom. You know, the day before yesterday, i congratulated a young west point appointee from my district who had to apply for the Academy Without his senior year even being in school. Put him in a great disadvantage to other applicants from florida and other states. Were working at a disadvantage. The governor so far has not been willing to take on his own Teachers Union. This is one of the many Wrong Directions that is causing a lock of confidence in our current governor. Martha quick comment on this before i let you go. The likelihood for adam schiff to be the Attorney General of california. I think its extremely likely. The governor has filled a lot of those roles for minorities and set asides if you will. He has to choose someone that he believes will have his back. Adam schiff is a consummate fund raiser and a democrat that is reliable to his base. So i suspect he will be the logical choice. He wouldnt be my first choice. I dont think hes been honest in a number of things hes done. I would not be surprised at all the he gets the nod. Martha thank you very much, congressman issa. They dont want school choice. Thats the key to breaking the poverty cycle. I saw your interview with mayor lightfoot. Those are crocodile tears. Its ironic in the democratic cities that they have kept the Public Schools closed but yet the private schools are open. That is the problem in l. A. Where i live and chicago and these big democratic cities. Teachers unions, they care about power and control.
