And an auto workers strike just revving up. Tox on top of twin jolts that could have consumers hitting the brakes. Sellers on wall street, well, hitting in mass. First to capitol hill where the clock is running out and now fear of a prolonged shut down is beginning to set in. Is there anything that d. C. Can do to stop it . South Carolina Republican senator president ial candidate tim scott is here. Bipartisan texas duo, mike mccaul and henry cuellar. Your world is now. Welcome, everybody. Im neil cavuto. We begin with chad pergram on capitol hill on a countdown to a shut down. I guess right now, chad, is looking more and more likely. What can you tell us . Neil, good afternoon. The government is all that shut down right now. Theres no rescue plan out of this culdesac. The house cant approve its own bill to fund the government for a month and bolster Border Security. The vote 232 to 198 with 21 gop nos. One group wants to be more extreme than the other group. So even their effort to pass a continuing resolution amongst themselves failed spectacularly. The Chief Economist at Goldman Sachs estimates theres a 90 chance a shut down could run for three weeks. Fox has told some republicans theyre willing to have a shut down in to mid october. Thats when military paychecks are due. Theres chatter that some republicans may try to remove Kevin Mccarthy from the speakership. Have you seen the report that hardliners have been trying to replace you . I saw that when i ran for speaker. Did you see that yesterday . They never gave up. They never voted for me. Republicans are attacking each other as gop florida representative matt gaetz takes to democrats about the pros respects of bouncing mccarthy. Theres only one person to blame for any potential government shutdown. Thats matt gaetz. Hes not a conservative republican. Hes a charlottean. When youre working with democrats to try to vacate the speaker, youre a joke. The senate has a bipartisan bill which can pass. It scored the support of 3 4s of all senators on two price test votes. The conservatives are blocking the senate from voting on that bill until sunday or monday. That is after the shutdown deadline. Neil . Neil one of the reasons why we had the big fall out on wall street, the lows down 158 points, off a month for stocks, was this notion that well have a shut down and could be a lengthy one. What do you think about that . Its be possible because its all about the math. Theres no matrix to move this. They hit their session lows earlier in the day about the same time that the house defeated that interim spending bill. That echos back with the financial fallout in 2008. Neil very good. Thanks, chad. Well get a closer idea of where we stand on this late tomorrow. Michael mccaul joins us, the texas republican working in concert and henry cuellar, the texas democrat. Both kind enough to join us. We have a lot to get to, including what youve been trying to do on the border. I did want to first talk about this prospect of a shutdown. To you, chairman mccaul, it seems like thats inevitable. The only thing in doubt is how long it might last. What do you think . Well, i think thats right. Neil, ive seen this movie many times before. It doesnt end so well. Shutdown never benefits the American People or our Service Members that get their pay docked. The members on the border, cbp, Border Patrol agents. I hope we can get this resolved without a longterm shutdown. At the end of the day, we get this done in a bipartisan fashion. You know, you cant get everything you want just one side of the aisle. So i think youre going to see a Senate Version coming back to the house. Well see where this goes. Again, another point, neil, is they always blame republicans for shutdowns. Politically i dont see this really working well for my party either if they dont see that we can govern. Neil so on that point, it will stick to the republican argument here that is four or five making it very difficult to wrap this up. All it takes is one of them to disenchanted about Kevin Mccarthy and how hes handling this to boot him out. What do you think about that . Well, i think that would create more dysfunction, a lack of leadership. If we oust Kevin Mccarthy as speaker, then we go into speaker elections. You know, kevin has been able to surprise everybody against the odds and get things done. We have a conference after this interview where were going to talk about the path moving forward. So i hope we can Work Together as a team and not be divided. When were united, we win. When divided, we lose. This c. R. Had a lot of Board Security provisions on it that i personally thought were very good. Came out of the Homeland Security committee including my remain in mexico policy, which cut down on these political asylum claims and quite frankly shut the spigot off to illegal immigration. Yet you had 21 republicans voting against it. Neil well see where that goes. Congressman cuellar, both of you had a chance to meet with the Foreign Minister of mexico. Went to the border. Went to assess the situation. Now youve heard from a number of your colleagues, congressman, that said theres no crisis at the border and its not as bad as its been portrayed. How do you feel about that . Well, i live on the border. I dont just go visit for a few minutes. We do have an immigration crisis. Security is a different thing. The border is secure when we talk about crime statistics. When we talk about immigration, yes, we have a problem. Michael mccaul neil when you say secure, people cant come through lick asive. Security like safety. When you look at the federal official numbers, youll see laredo, for example, is about two, three times safer than washington d. C. The murder rate here neil i understand that. Thats not i guess your definition of security and mine are a tad different. I dont want to argue semantics with you. Its deemed dangerous and out of control, whatever your thoughts on that. Im wondering did your meeting with the Foreign Minister give you some Common Ground that you guys, you know, found that looks encouraging or not . Yeah. Let me just finish my thought. Crime statistics are lower on the border. Immigration, yes, we have a rob. Im in agreement. We have a problem with immigration. What we did is talk Michael Mccaul and i, what we want to do is make sure that we push security and immigration policies outside the one yard line called the u. S. Mexico border. If we can do it on their 20 yard line, it will work better. Thats what we want to do. Stop people before they get to the u. S. Border. Otherwise, its very difficult. Lets do the work outside in the southern part of mexico, guatemala, lets work with pa panama, columbia. Lets secure those areas. Neil both of you are more familiar with whats happening on the border. You hear about mexico that, you know, the soldiers might be there. Mexican soldiers might be at the border. Theyre watching the migrants come flooding in to our country and do do anything. Is that a real problem, chairman mccaul . Yeah, i think mexico is not fully cooperating to help security our border. Henry is right. We have to push the border out and not play at our goal line. Push this thing out. I thought the Prior Administration had this right by stopping all of these people coming in to the United States by adjudicating their political asylum claims in mexico. Thats what i brought up with the Foreign Minister. Can we process these migrants in mexico rather than in the United States . Because neil, once they touch base, Catch And Release neil is that on mexico . Were not doing enough to force that on mexico . Some candidates like nikki haley have advised maybe you just freeze all transactions with mexico because of this until they change. Well, that was a provision that i had in hr 2, the Border Security big. We passed a foreign operations bill where i did just that it defunds the secretarys salary until he puts remain in mexico back in place. Well see if that gets through the senate. But mexico has a responsibility here. Neil got it. Real quickly, come man cuellar. Do you trust mexico . Lets look at 2015 and 2019. President obama and President Trump. Why do the numbers go down in 2015 and 2019 . The main reasons they went down is because mexico was actually using their military folks at their southern border and they were stopping people before they came in. So there is a way like Michael Mccaul and i are saying. Theres a way we can get mexico to do more. It happened under President Obama in 2015 and under President Trump in 2019. We can do it now. We have to get mexico to do their job at the southern border. Thanks, gentleman. Your a shining example of working together whatever party differences. Thanks to you both and have a great weekend. Thank you. Neil any regular viewer of this show or my weekend show, you know this is a theme, something i stress. You deserve to hear from all sides, all parties all the time. Neil the United Auto Workers warned us this strike could expand. Now they have 7,000 Picket Workers out there. They expanded this with two of the big automakers but left out one so far today. Jeff flock to get in to the details in wayne, michigan. Hi, jeff. You were warned. Yeah. Thats what happened today. G. M. And ford in the cross hairs. Stellantis not so much. Now it is getting nasty out here, neil. Both sides firing at each other. The ceo of ford, jim farley, saying and i quote him, that the uaw is scaring workers about losing jobs and holding the negotiations hostage over battery plants. Sean fain firing back against mr. Fairly saying hes lying. Probably because hes not been showing up at the negotiations very much. G. M. Gets involved saying that the uaw is not serious about ending the strike. I asked mr. Fain about that very thing a short time ago. G. M. Says you still havent responded to their last contract offer. Its false. Weve been meeting with them over and over. The irony, they want to talk about me not being there every day . Ive been there every day. Take a look at the numbers. Yeah, its a g. M. Plant in chicago, 4,600 workers walking the picket lines there i should have said a ford plant. A g. M. Plant in lansing, michigan, 2,300 worker theres. We have pictures from that ford plant, by the way. That is the explorer plan. Ive been there more than any other plant. And thats a big seller for ford. They also make the police intercepter, which is favored by a lot of Police Forces around the country. The g. M. Plant makes s. U. V. S, the chevy traverse, the g. M. Acade and the buick encore. Jim farley said that sean fain has been on tv more than jake from state farm. If he wanted to hurt him, i would have thought he said hes been on tv more than neil cavuto from fox. But that wouldnt have been true. Nobody is on more than you. Neil would have been insulting to you. Thanks, jeff. Meantime, you get the idea with the strikers looking at a pay hike of 20 . They turned that money down. You have to think of the other generous pay packages that weve seen where you get ups workers that are seeing 30 plus benefits faced in over years. Youve seen pilots garner 40 Wage Increases. Thats a smart part of the overall population to be sure, but it does have inflation carryover. Kevin hassett following that, the former white house Chief Economist. What do you think of this, kevin . The reverberating effect no matter how this ends with the United Auto Workers. That i will have copycat strikes down the root. The inflationary effort is what . The inflationary impact is it create as spiral. So what is going on, one of the key asks is a Cost Of Living Adjustment, the cola that we used to talk about in the 70s and the 80s, which was a part of every negotiation. If your wages adjust with inflation in real time, then you dont end up having a big decline in your standard of living, which is what most americans are seeing right now. You talk about the uaw strike. Theres 66,000 People Striking In Vegas right now against the casinos. A big Healthcare Strike in california. The bureau of la bore statistics reports on how many days are lost because of work stoppages. Four million in august. The reason why people are doing this, they have not been able to keep up with inflation. The problem youve highlighted on your show since inflation started, once the wages start chases the prices back up, the prices have to go up again and you ends up in a 1970s spiral. I had a chance to a Voting Member of the Federal Reserve the other day on fox business, which ifdown dont get you should demand. You already do. Its nice. But one of the things he was saying is this idea the fed having to be in the position of a preemptive strike to hike rates to ward off the inflation that might come, it does complicate things, doesnt it . Oh, for sure. What will happen, first of all, is that a lot of these people that have power will see big Wage Increases and that will feed through to prices again. So the feds models are pretty forward looking. So once theres actually a contract and they say, okay, were phasing in the Wage Increases over time that will go to the Inflation Outlook that they present to the governors when they vote. The bottom line, if the Cost Of Living Adjustment was left in the Union Contract and taken out back when President Obama was saving the auto companies, if it stayed in, their wages would be 40 higher. 40 . Thats what theyre asking for. Make it whole. Martha thats the fear, that its sticking and will take awhile to correct. Thats right. Neil amazing. Kevin, thanks very much. Good catching up with you. Meantime, were keeping track of this nasty weather in the northeast. It frankly caught a lot of people by surprise because maybe some of them didnt have the fox weather app. Be that as it may, the fact of the matter is, theres a State Of Emergency in new jersey in new york. Eric adams says this is a storm that we cannot take lightly and were not taking lightly. Roads are covered in ward. Terminals in la guardia that are covered in water. Train stations with a fraction of trains running and millions in new york and connecticut and new york and new jersey that are desperate to find a way to get home. Good luck on that. More after this.
