Look, there were a lot of things that didnt have to well under Kevin Mccarthy but a reason i voted no on the motion to vacate is because we were going through the appropriations process. It was late. It was not perfect. We were trying to be conservative in our spending bills. I wanted to cut a lot more. At the end of the day we should have finished our work and right now there is no ability to do anything on the house floor. We sent out a schedule to get all our work done by the end of october. That schedule is now going to get tossed out the window. So what happened with kevin is something i did not want to see happen. But our job right now as a Republican Party in the house is to come together, figure out who the next leader will be and we have to get back to work. The American People need us to function. Bill you took six weeks off and went on august break. Who is to say if you stayed in washington you would have made Progress Given the rub that weve watched over the last two days . The criticism is fair. There were many members like myself who said we need to stay and figure out this stuff with the Appropriation Bills before anybody goes anywhere. At a minimum we have to make sure we have a steady working schedule through the august recess. That did not occur. One of the things that was happening even before the august recess is that there was an impasse on how much we wanted to spend. Members were communicating that to the Leadership Team and it really just didnt get anywhere fast. So it is frankly a failure on all sides at this point in time. Kevin mccarthy was the leader of the house and there were enough members to safe we want to see a change and thats where we are right now. Bill a couple of things maybe the audience doesnt recall. You said last night you said every member has a voice. Which is a great thing to say. You have a fourvote majority easier said than done. A different way to run the house. What Speaker Pelosi did in 2019 is she changed that rule. She said you have to have a majority of the caucus to vacate the chair to have a vote to remove the speaker. And Speaker Mccarthy negotiated in good faith with people like matt gaetz to change it back to one member of the caucus. But when you are facing a fourvote majority, you are always on tinder hooks, are you not . You are. But you have to understand something. Every member of congress is sent here by the people. Not a Leadership Team or a group somewhere on capitol hill. People back home send them. I didnt want to see this. I didnt want to see us be gridlocked and deadlocked until we can find a new leader. But i do believe that every member of congress should have the ability to represent the interests of their districts and the one vote motion to vacate is part of that as distasteful as it may look, as much as people dont want to see this current situation, that provision in house rules has been there for a very long time. Just because nancy pelosi changed it, doesnt make it right. Bill you respect what matt gaetz did then, is that right . No, i disagreed with it and told matt that. I dont agree with this. We shouldnt be doing this but focused on funding the government, working through appropriations bill and securing the nations border. Thats what we should be focused on. I think for all my republican colleagues where we go next, security of our southern border is of utmost paramount and get back to work as quickly as we can to figure out how to fund the government. Bill every member has a voice and thats important and you said you dont respect what gaetz did. I dont have to agree with a member even though i respect every members voice. They represent people in their district just like i represent people in mine. I think the one thing that has come out of this. The days of top down leadership in washington i believe those days are over. But this is not going to be the prettiest picture for everybody to see what democracy, the republic as it stands is what will flourish going forward. I may not agree with the tactical decision but respect every members ability to do it. The districts who voted to remove them. A lot are ruby red. They dont stand a chance of losing their seat and gaetz is one of them. Is your caucus ready to anoint the next speaker . Because if you are and you get this done in the next ten days, a lot of this is forgotten. Where is that now . Look, i think members are going to get there pretty fast. There were a lot of conversations last night. Everybody trying to figure out what to do next. This morning well have more conversation, different parts of the republican conference. I think well be able to come together pretty quickly, have a new leader and go ahead and anoint a new speaker and do our business. All that can occur. This is something i didnt want to see but we are where we are. Now is the time to be focused on the path forward. Thats what im committed to doing. A 45 minute delay during the Afternoon Session and the reason why was because of a social media post about one of the judges staffers, former President Trump posted on truth social and eventually took down a picture of one of the judges staffers with Senate Majority leader Chuck Schumer. In the caption of the picture former President Trump called the staffer schumers girlfriend and said that she is running the case against him. Now this is a bench trial, bill, which means there is no jury, the judge has sole discretion in deciding the punishment for former President Trump. That is something that trump posted about on truth social writing, quote, i am not even entitled to a jury. There is no checking of a box alternative. This was done by radical left marxist design.
