Sandra fighting intensifying on day ten of the war in The Middle East, and any moment now israel could launch a massive Ground Invasion into gaza hoping to defeat hamas once and for all. John it was a long journey but worth being here. John roberts in jerusalem. Good to spend monday with you. This is america reports. Here in jerusalem, just turned 8 00 p. M. And the situation continues to change minute by minute as israel fights for its very survival. In a concerning development, israel this morning began evacuating residents along its northern border with lebanon sparking fears that the war could spread. Sandra and here is what we know at this hour. Hamas is holding 199 hostages in gaza, which may include more than a dozen americans. But, officials also say they have new intelligence on where hamas may be holding them. John coming up, speak with a member of the idf special Operations Forces as the military prepares to deploy to gaza and rescue hostages. Sandra Fox Team Coverage on the breaking news at this hour from the war in The Middle East. Begin with trey yingst, live on the ground. Rockets fired all day where you are, trey. What is the latest from there . Moments ago we saw two long range rockets stream off the gaza strip headed north and as we speak, there are sirens sounding in the city of tel aviv, israels second largest city. The third time today tel aviv has taken rocket fire from gaza. Its surprising that jerusalem and tel aviv remain under rocket fire since the Israelis Have launched thousands of airstrikes over the gaza strip the past ten days. They have killed a senior hamas official in the middle of gaza, they say the person involved in General Intelligence was killed in an airstrike earlier today and in response to the rockets, israel targeting gaza with artillery. Take a look. You can see behind my israeli Artillery Units fire on the northern part of the gaza strip. Targeting gaza from the air and the ground, trying to put as much pressure on hamas as possible. Today we spoke with the idf spokesman about whats taking place in israel, and he indicated a lot of the concern right now is on the northern border where there has been a lot of antitank fire into the northern part of the country. Israelis have responded who they say is linked to iran. Hezbollah carried out shooting attacks to distract from the war effort in the south and iranian instruction and support. There was talk of a ceasefire this morning. Israelis say no ceasefire and they will continue to target gaza. And one said hamas is blocking some roads and they had to get out of the car and walk south to a safer location. Sandra. Sandra trey, just continued remarkable reporting on the ground there. At least 270 americans stuck in israel have landed in florida as part of an Emergency Evacuation from the embattled country. Lucas tomlinson live in tel aviv, how many more americans do we expect evacuated from israel by the State Department . The state Department Officials are not very clear about that, john, its notable some 600 remain, although just earlier today we saw 100 americans leaving on the cruise ship. One of the reasons, the Rocket Attacks. Trey mentioned a long range rocket leaving gaza and heading to the northern part of the country. We heard its impact, its the third Rocket Attack and the first one came when Secretary Of State Antony Blinken was meeting with the israel Prime Minister here in your neck of the woods in jerusalem. And again, we spoke to some of those americans, many scared, some were on vacation, some cutting them short. What they had to say. If it wasnt for her, if it wasnt for her i wouldnt leave. I feel im not contributing so much since the u. S. Provides for its citizens, i couldnt resist. The last couple days reached my limit, so going to the states to be with family. We are told Secretary Blinken rushed to a shelter during the latest attack, the third today. This comes as the state Department Says 30 americans have now been killed in this massacre by hamas and some 13 other americans are missing, and perhaps being held captive by hamas. Now, while Many Americans are departing israel, john, others are rushing in to help. We bumped into an american rabbi from parkland, florida, who flew in, says the worst Terrorist Attacks in israels history. Hes raised hundreds of thousands of dollars and used it to buy body armour and other things for israeli forces. We spoke to him why he felt compelled to come here. You see there is a crisis unfolding and asking what they could do, i knew i could make a difference by getting out there, and showing that we are not afraid, we are not scared. John, we are about an hour northwest from where you are broadcasting from in jerusalem, near the mediterranean coast and thats where the cruise ship right now is transiting to cyprus with some 100 americans on board, and perhaps under some air cover from the Super Hornets off the u. S. S. Gerald ford. John seems as Many Americans are trying to get out of israel, so are americans trying to get back in, maybe to join up with the idf in reserve unit or contribute some other way. The u. S. S. Eisenhower will join the u. S. S. Ford off israels coast in the eastern mediterranean. U. S. Officials want to prevent the possibility of a new Battle Front Forming after hezbollah unleashed airstrikes into israel from lebanon. Rich is joining us, live at the pentagon with what we know at this hour. This is a major increase, rich, In American Fire Power in the region. Yeah, it really is, sandra. And when you listen to what defense secretary lloyd austin has to say about this, it shows the u. S. Commitment to israel but also deterrence in the region to try to keep the conflict from spreading. U. S. S. Eisenhower, its captain, christopher hill, says that they have trained rigorously for this deployment and they are excited to celebrate the navys 248th birthday by sending the Best Damn Ship In The Navy to see. On top of the missiles and war planes, the navy is positioning in the region, the air force is Spending Squadrons of f15, f16, and fighter aircraft, more than 100 Attack Planes in the region. And freeing those american hostages, another intention. Be careful what we say publicly about our efforts to get hostages home. Secretary blinken is on the ground, working literally by the hour. We dont have necessarily all the information we need to try to get them home. On whether the u. S. Would commit forces to free hostages, kirby will refuse to rule anything out. Senior defense Officials Say the United States has no intention of putting boots on the ground here in this fight but the u. S. Has been helping with intelligence and with planning. Pentagon says its also working to fulfill the munitions that israel is going to need with all this, includes air defenses, precision guided artillery and missile and medical supplies. And they say secretary austin has been basically in touch almost on a daily basis with the Israeli Defense minister, and that they are expected to speak again today. Back to you, sandra. There was news yesterday that because of the rain and the low cloud cover that any Ground Operation was going to be delayed. The big question across israel everybody is asking is, when might this Ground Operation begin . What can you tell us . Yes, i know we are all ready, we are trained, we are prepared. We dont want to be here. We have families, i have three little kids. Made my immigration from america 20 years ago here, jewish family, but we have to defend our kids, we have to secure our borders and yes, yes, we are doing our part. Our unit specializes in rescue and all kinds of special things the regular army is not prepared for but i did hear word it is delayed the major entrance is delayed to dismantle hamas is delayed for a few more days. Its unclear exactly, i believe its shabbat now coming up saturday that we will have the major, of course you know there are missions going in that we dont talk about, but they are the big, big one is supposed to be in a few days, not tonight. Here is the thing is we have to recognize, we have to be Good Shepherds. There is a shepherd over us, right, and america understands that. I think that people that have not had enemies at their door a long time fell asleep, when you have a real enemy you need to address that, you need to stand up and be a Good Shepherd yourself. Can you talk to our viewers about hamass extensive Tunnel System under gaza and what that will mean once this Ground Invasion eventually occurs . There is definitely a lot of information that again, i am a Sergeant Major in the elite force. Im not an official spokesperson, i can say i do speak english, a jewish man, and i can say ive been in many tunnels, having done this, many, many wars and Missions Including in lebanon in 2006. I can say that our unit knows that the risks are real. I mean, tom cruise and Mission Impossible would have a very hard time to debt through the tunnel threat. Its intricate, all booby trapped, and concerns that russiansupplied mega bombs may be awaiting under the ground even before we get to the tunnel. So a lot of speculation. I cant give exact information. We are doing our absolute best with the top precision, i know we looked into it recently, now its time to show these criminals, these grotesque terrorists that terror that is not going to continue. Our families will be safe and security will be restored. John i know, chaim in the past couple of days the Israeli Air Force or idf forces have been flying the commanders over the battle field to get a lay of the land, still seems like a hornets nest no matter how you cut it. The response today meeting with the Secretary Of State Antony Blinken, elsissi of egypt says israel is beyond the realm of selfdefense and now into collective punishment of the palestinian people. What do you say as a soldier who is about to go into gaza to that criticism . Well, i would say people love freedom, to all patriots out there. We didnt want a war, we dont want to have any kind of we wanted it was a Peace Festival for crying out loud, it was a Peace Festival, to see people kidnapped, 199, probably more, and raped and murdered. Its about dismantling thats bad, hamas is bad for their own people, and rescuing the palestinians from that we have a thing in israel called purity of arms, its a training to minimalize, and calls saying please get away from the terrorists and let us do our job, and yes, egypt will open up and they will let them come through, and we are excited about that, get out of harms way. We dont want collateral damage, we dont want any civilian injuries, its not our way because we are defenders, Israeli Defense force, just here to defend the homeland and people dont want to be here, but we have to. Sandra could you give us a bit about your time on the ground and what you have seen and sort of what you felt since youve been there. John you know, it got a little interesting this afternoon. Since we finally got in on saturday and it was a difficult time trying to get in here, took an entire day to make our way across the border and up into jerusalem, but had not been any Air Raid Sirens until this afternoon when suddenly all the alerts went off and we have an alert on our phone that tells us where anywhere in israel there are alerts going off or might be missiles flying. One of those alerts went off earlier today and said jerusalem was under attack, and moments later we heard boom boom, and that was the iron dome Defense System going off and the missiles were intercepted right over my shoulder here, so the missiles were fairly close to jerusalem, unnerved a lot of people. Our photographer, frank, was down on the streets and got a lot of people who were running for cover, and they had gotten some sort of sense that they might be a little more secure here in jerusalem, well, that sense was shattered this afternoon, sandra. Sandra john, thank you for that. This is obviously going to be crucial hours that are coming up in this fight. Secretary of state Antony Blinken back in israel for a second time in less than a week after President Biden warned that new Israeli Occupation of gaza would be a big mistake. Sandra as israel prepares for a massive Ground Invasion of gaza, Defense Minister says he is not interested in waging war on the Northern Front but that could change as Lebanese Hezbollah fighters attack army outposts. James carafano, retired Lieutenant Colonel who also serves as Senior Counsel to the president joins us now. James, thank you for joining us. Likely an imminent Ground Invasion in gaza, watching what is happening at sea, as we enter the 10th day of the war and the United States will soon have two carriers deployed to the region. We know the gerald ford is there, and eisenhower deployed to the area. Its a big difference between having one carrier or two, anybody that has seen top gun knows how complicated to fly stuff off the desk and then pilot back and rest and refuel, two carriers, closer to having the capacity to conduct sustained operations. Sandra let me interrupt you right there. I want to make sure everybody has the geographic location approximately, because we are not given the exact location of this group. So we have an approximate location. Talk about the distance off of the borders here, what it means to be a certain distance from being struck and also a certain distance where you can strike. Right. So, what happens is when you have two carriers, you can fly stuff out and you can keep stuff permanently over the target, so really extends the range and the time on station that you have, and the responsiveness that you can do. So where this probably comes into play is honestly, serious like Free Fire Zone and we all know one of the real challenges and the concerns about the u. S. And syria has always been, is iran being able to build a land bridge, logistical pipeline that allows hezbollah to conduct sustained operations against the israelis because they can just keep feeding in equipment and ammunition and supplies. So, very likely what the u. S. Is saying here is look, we will pummel all that stuff. The buildup, the change, anything in syria will probably die if you guys start a second front. Thats probably the message. Got it. So we are left with approximate location off of the Southern Coast of lebanon, obviously identifying where gaza is here on the map, and that Carrier Group in the region with the eisenhower on the way there. What is at stake with the evacuation, james, 1. 1 Million People from the Northern Area in the red here in gaza, they have been told to evacuate south. We know the rafa Border Crossing is opened up, we are told a Million People have been able to get out. What is this like and what do we know about the evacuation so far, james . Its a lot of people, and every day it provides more opportunity for people to move out and to house them. So that actually refuses the casualties. But lets be honest. Run the numbers. A Million People that you are trying to move. And remember, hamas actually doesnt want people to move, they want a human shield. So no matter how many days we have, how much time, there are going to be civilians in harms way when the Israelis Go In. The last time they went in in a major way, they went in for 22 days. So we are probably going to see an operation, if the Israelis Go In an major way that is going to be at least many days, and so that means that if people are going to be displaced for days, probably weeks or longer. They wont be able to go back because the stuff where they live will be destroyed. Sandra all taken into consideration as we look at those evacuation routes. That will be key and we know right now hamas has about 199 held hostage there. Its estimated that about a dozen of them could be american. Real quick, james, want to move on to our next screen here, when you look at those evacuation routes, two main roads for evacuation just to give people idea of how difficult of a process this has been under such a timely manner, real quick want to finish off here, james. Ill toss a question to you on the Northern Israel border, obviously focusing on the recent attacks coming from Hezbollah Out of lebanon, we are identifying some of the recent clashes here, you see them in the yellow right on the border, james. The Rocket Attacks are labelled in blue here. Right on the border, the drone strike and the green here, antitank fire in the red, but this border obviously with the israelis telling their people to evacuate that northern border, this is sending a strong signal about this war widening, james. What can you tell us . Two things. One, if they were going to open up a second front, the logic would be you would wait til the israelis are engaged in the south before you attack in the northern. Israelis are doing preemptive operation to slow down this, but this is the key thing to watch out for if the second front opens up. Sandra james, thank you very much for taking us through that. Appreciate it. All right, john. John sandra, President Biden warning israel not to reoccupy gaza, calling into question whether his administration is standing behind israel full stop. He called on the country to use restraint in responding to the hamas attacks. The editor and chef of the Jerusalem Post join us now. Avi, i want to play what the president said last week and contrast with cbs last night. Israel has the right to defend itself and its people full stop. I think that it would be a mistake to for israel to occupy gaza again. John last week he says the United States is behind israel full stop, last night i dont think it would be a good idea for israel to reoccupy gaza. The big question in peoples minds, if the idf does decimate hamas to the degree that Benjamin Netanyahu says it needs to be and people here in israel say it needs to be, what comes next . Does israel have to occupy gaza at least for a period of time . The question a lot of israelis are asking themselves, and i think for many years the presumption was that we can keep hamas in power, we shouldnt try to bring them down. Hamas may be a horrific Terrorist Organization with genocide aims and constantly attempting to murder jews but pragmatic, and wants to govern the territory, and it could be reined in and last week an organization is worse than isis in many respects and that Cannot Bereaned with and wiped off the map. I think thats where a lot of israelis are at. Decimating the organization to make sure it cannot carry out a massacre like last weekend ever again. John including the mother of a young man nearly killed in his Kibbutz South near the very tip of gaza where it abutts the egyptian border. She basically said that you know, we played this game, israel has of cat and mouse with hamas and that it has to end. That this cant go on any longer. Right. I think many israelis feel as you said, we have been through so many rounds of this before and hamas has retained its capacity to kill israelis, it cant happen again. This needs to be the end of the rounds of fighting. So yes, of course, we need to worry about what happens next, another Islamic Organization could come, but hamas needs to be decimated, i think thats how many israelis feel right now. John i was talking yesterday with the former ambassador to the u. S. , and he thought you know, you can try to decimate hamas but like isis you can crush it, but it will start to grow back up again because the roots are very, very deep and these are not organizations that are living in the modern world. He told me he spent a couple of years when he was working on his ph. D. Reading ancient islamic texts and those are the papers, those are the books that these groups are reading. They come from this place, this ideological place that is simply fused with hatred, and to murder all jews, its in their charter, it guides them to this day. I was in a community that was targeted earlier today just last week in the massacre and there were prayer mats in their mind, devout muslims, living what they believe is islam. We know its a pervasion of islam, islam is a religion like any other and there are good and bad people, they are not going to let go of the ideology soon. John tomorrow in the Jerusalem Post there will be an editorial regarding serving in the idf. You moved in the idf, this involves orthodox jews. For a long time a debate in israel over exemption granted, particularly Ultra Orthodox Jews from military service. They tend to study religious texts and academies, and the majority of israelis do serve in the military and right now, inflection point, 360,000 reservists, including, and of course the regular forces at the border, it does not feel like the time to talk about that kind of exemption, and so our position is that once it resumes regular work, once things settle down and the dust settles, any talk of an exemption for anyone in the society should fall by the wayside and everyone should be required to serve in at least some capacity. Its not a coincidence they reached the bigger cities on the day that Antony Blinken is in town and when israeli lawmakers were meeting in jerusalem. They had to take cover. We have reports Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was pulled by a Security Detail out of a vehicle and forced to take cover alongside a road, as the war rages on. Meantime, in tel aviv, the National Institute of Forensic Medicine is busy working to identify the bodies of those killed in the october 7th massacre. Some 956 remains have been brought to that lab. They have been able to make positive identification on 506 people. The director of the lab says its uniquely difficult because of the shape of the bodies and also some cases there isnt preexisting data to help them make the identification and he said people have to accept the reality there may be some people who are never identified. Extended behind these charred bodies, something terrible happened and this is difficult. I saw many things in my career, many things, but the magnitude is terrible and the cruelty is terrible. Hezbollah continues to menace israel from the north and increase tensions on the northern border with antitank fire, rocket fire, even with small arms fire. Said if hezbollah continues down the path the results will be deadly. Sandra mike, thank you. John. John as israel inches closer to launching the massive Ground Operation into gaza, there are growing concerns israel may be forced to fight a twofront war with the iranian backed Group Hezbollah in lebanon. I had a chance to speak with a former israeli ambassador to the United States on the streets of tel aviv, michael oren knows a thing or two about war in The Middle East. We are on the streets of tel aviv with michael oren, former israeli ambassador to the United States, we spent a lot of time together in the war against hezbollah in 2006. You also wrote about the six day war from 1967. Whats going on in this neighborhood as a result of the war . Hi, john. This is florentine, one of the coolest neighborhoods, its like the east village of tel aviv, full of bars, great restaurants, we are in front of a jazz club, one of the premier, its arabic for ceasefire, you cant make that up. But you see its closed and the bar across the street, everything is closed. John as the war against hamas against, based on what you know of military operations, you were a Volunteer Spokesman for the idf when we first met. Hamas is going to fight, its going to fire off all of its rockets, between 10, 15,000 rockets, they are reaching tel aviv, and they fired a rocket to reach Northern Israel as well, and paralyze our economy, you dont see any tourists here, and you see the beautiful wall art, and people do tours. So economically they are going to exact a tremendous high price in terms of human life, soldiers life a high price and in terms of the palestinian population, they want their people to get killed. And accused of war crimes and the International Community will stop us. John you were in charge of gaza in 2018 as a member of the israeli government. What are idf troops facing as they go in there . Facing a nightmare for any infantry man certainly to go into an area densely populated, but its an area of alleyways, and barricades and tunnels, underground bunkers. Its booby trapped, wired, its mined. And you cannot get a more perilous environment for an infantryman. Move cautiously, reduce as much as possible the level of casualties on our side, reduce the casualties on the civilian side. But we have to get to hamas. It not going to be easy. They are using their population as human shields, and now hostages as human shields. Hamas does not want them to evacuate. They want them to get killed. In 2006, the fighting lasted 33 days. It could last many weeks. Again, it depends whether a second front opens up. I think the israeli army will want to move as swiftly as possible. If for no other reason, this level of mobilization, talking about a huge percentage of the workforce, and these are young women and men in their 20s, their 30s, our hightech sector, so the costs here are enormous. So the idea so get this done as quickly as possible, demobilize the troops, start rebuilding and its going to be a process. Hopefully, hopefully it wont take longer than several weeks. John you are also suggesting, though, when you have this many reservists mobilized along with active duty forces, if you do something, now is the time to do it. Definitely. To get this level of mobilization takes a long time, expensive and disruptive to life. And so you cant do it every tuesday. John michael, what happened here and when . Direct hit about two days ago, 100 yards from my house. John could you hear the explosion . The whole neighborhood shook. Some of our critics say they are Firing Firecrackers at us. I would like to see a firecracker that takes down a building like this. John what was it before . Just a house, and people were injured and hospitalized. John these are not smart bombs. Just dumb bombs fired from gaza. The idea is to kill civilians, not to take out a strategic target, its just to drop them and create terror. The very fact that they are so inaccurate is what creates the terror. John and it could get worse. It will get worse.
