David welcome to journal editorial report, im david asman in for paul gigot. First of all, with israel it is 10 p. M. Where just moments ago Prime MinisterBenjamin Netanyahu promised to abillionish the evil abolish the evil of hamas and said the ongoing ground operation in gaza is the second stage of the war. Infantry and Armored Vehicles have moved in backed by massive strikes from the air and the sea including the bombing of hamas tunnels which is a key target in this campaign to crush the terror group once and for all following its brutal ea attack the on israel three weeks ago today. Lets go straight to southern israel where foxs Trey Yingst Is Standing by. Trey, its all yours. Reporter yeah, david, good afternoon. We are here along the israelgaza border. You can hear those thuds mt. Distance, both israeli artillery and tank units that are working at this hour hammering the northern part of the strip. Airstrikes targeted a number of different positions tonight, and we do know Israeli Forces are currently operating inside gaza. As we talk, you can hear the explosions in the distance. This is the most active its been since the war erupted 22 days ago. Tonight israeli Prime MinisterBenjamin Netanyahu addressing mt. Only his nation, but the entire world saying this is israels second war with of independence, adding we will win. He went on to the often the situation on the ground to talk about the situation on the ground and explained many people, including himself, will have to answer questions about that october 7th massacre, but the focus is on the forces currently operating merchandise gaza. Last night a Situational Assessment was held in tel aviv with the Prime Minister and his defense minister. Gallant spoke overnight saying this i completed a Situation Assessment last night. We have accomplished a pause in the war. We will continue to be strong and precise and hunt down every terrorist. Reporter now, david, the strikes inside gaza are getting more intense tonight. Once again the Israeli Military warned people in the northern part of gaza to evacuate south. Theyve been giving these warnings out for a few weeks now, dropping leaflets. Today they released a video message. Its important to note the people in gaza likely did not get it because of cell towers being down and having no internet connection. David trey, i just have to ask, the bombing that were hearing now, is that coming prosecute israeli side into the from the israeli side into gaza . Reporter yes, thatses all outgoing fire. And right now youre actually, you can see rockets being fired. The factions inside gaza are responding at this moment. Those are rockets coming off the northern part of the Gauze A Strip gaza strip being fired by a hamas. Were going to work to try and figure out where exactly theyre headed, but you just saw a number of them. Most of the explosions are actually israeli strikes, both artillery and airstrikes, but it does the appear theyre able to get rockets a off of the northern part of the strip. Youre watching all of this unfold at the moment, my producers going to tell me where those rockets are headed. They did not appear to be long range rockets, but certainly it gives you a sense of just how active this scene is, david, along the border. And those rockets are not long range, as i said, they are short range headed to the second city up from the northern border with the gaza strip. It is the remarkable that 32 the 2 days into 22 days into this conflict, theyve still maintained ability to fire rockets despite the air vieks and Artillery Units david also remarkable how well you report on all of this. Trey, please take care of yourself. Thank you so much. Appreciate president it. Joining me now is retired fourstar general and former cia director david petraeus. He commanded Coalition Forces in both iraq and afghanistan. General, good to see you. Thanks for being here. The idf, before we heard from Prime Minister netanyahu, we herald from idf chief of staff, and he said the following, he said this is a war with multiple stages. Today we move on to the next one. So is this, what were seeing today, the main incursion weve within waiting for . Been waiting for . I think it is. The test test its one of them. Its at least one of hem. They may launch another front to try to complicate the situation for hamas, but clearly there has been a decision made that hamas and its ally, islamic jihad, are exreamist armies. Extremist armies. They cannot be negotiatedded with, they have to be destroyed. Its a very substantial tax. In military terms it means to render the enemy incapable of accomplishing his mission without reconstitution. By the way, theyre going to have to make sure they cannot reconstitute in the Postconflict Phase as well with. But theyre going to have to go through the most challenging of urban areas that i can think of. We cleared lots of major cities during the fight to destroy alqaeda in iraq, which we did carry out but again, nothing like the challenges that you see here. The tunnel systems, the willingness of individuals to blow themselves up to take Israeli Soldiers with hem the, an enemy that doesnt wear uniforms, that uses civilians as human shields, has over 200 hostages that it likely will use in some capacity as well and is very, very capable. We saw the diabolically, Horrifically Creative Attack that resulted in the barbaric acts that have precipitated this particular if offensive. But this is going to be a very, very tough fight, and theyre going to have to clear every building, floor, room, cellar, tunnel and then retain it. You have to clear and hold an area before you move on to the next one. Its very sequential, its very methodical, and they have cleary begun that clearly begun that, establishing a foothold in the urban areas, trying to use their Armored Vehicleses as far as he can go before having to the Expose Infantrymen to the enemy. You can hear how significant a fight this is. David and how will their main mission of wiping out Hamas Conflict with another mission of saving the hostages . Very, very challenging and also conflict with trying to adhere to their concept of purity of arms which is their interpretation, very similar to ours, of the geneva convention, the laws of land warfare, trying to minimize loss of innocent civilian life, trying to limit damage to civilian infrastructure and to forth. These are not mutually exclusive, but they are very, very difficult. Theyre not completely compatible, and thats the reality of this kind of very tough urban fight. Having made the determination that they must destroy these extremist elements. I hope that well hear more over time as well9 about how they will add a more gaza administer gaza saw. Its pretty clear youre not going to see Palestinian Authority members riding in the backs of israeli tanks to do that. I think that israel will inevitably have to the carry that out to administer the distribution of humanitarian assistance, Restore Basic services and so forth. And i think laying out a future for what the life for the Palestinian People can be in gaza without hamas would be advisable as well. Something we sought to do for the sunni arabs when we sought to slip them away there from alqaeda. David but getting back to the whats happening right now, will u. S. Forces which, of course, are offshore many fairly large numbers considering how much action there is going on there, will they be used in any way to back up the idf forces . I dont think so, and i dont think that the Israeli Defense forces want us to do that either. The only conceivable application might be if some of the u. S. Citizen hostages were identified in a situation where we could use special Operations Forces to rescue them. But, again, i think israelis and they have stated this this is their fight. They intend to the prosecute it themselves. The different obviously if were engaged, just as was the can case in iraq where iranians supported shia militia carried out over a dozen drone and Rocket Attacks on various bases in iraq and also syria, eastern and northeastern syria with, and we carried out target targeted operations against iraniansupported she what a Militia Sites in eastern david forgive me, but how effective do you think that was . Our jet strikes against the iranbacked forces in syria . You dont want to be the on the x if we are going after a target like that. They can be very effective. It sends a message. Obviously, what were trying to do is contain that to deferer the the deter any future action, we may have to even expand what it is that we are doing. I dont think iran wants to except into a direct fight with the United States, but the possibility of regionalization of this war is very real. As you know, hezbollah in Southern Lebanon and other huge iraniansupported militia element, has over 150,000 rockets and missiles. Some of those have considerable range and act rahs rassi. They could conceivably overwhelm the air and missile defenses of israel. But if they do, thats an act of suicide on their part, because israels going to the hammer them even worse than in 2006, the last time they had a war with israel. Reassessed, in fact, the extent of the damage several times subsequently. In fact, when i was the regional combatant commander, u. S. Central command and then later when i was the director of the cia. David general david petraeus, thank you very much on this very significant day the in the war. Thank you for being here, appreciate it. When we come back, calls for the United Nations secretarygeneral to resign following his comments about the hamas attacks. Plus, President Biden facing mounting pressure from the left to walk back his support for israel as a his Job Approval Craters among democrats. Thats coming up. Makes every day. A lets dig in day. N. Secretarygeneral Antonio Gutierrez renewed his call earlier today the for a humanitarian ceasefire as israel expands its offensive in gaza. Israel is calling on gutierrez to resign following these comments at an a Emergency Meeting of the u. N. Security council week. Listen. It is important to the also recognize the effects by hamas did not happen in a vacuum. The Palestinian People have been subjected to 56 years of suffocating occupation. They have seen their land steadily devolved by settlements and plagued by violence. Their economy is stifled, their people displaced and their homes demolished. Their hopes for a political solution to that plight have been van isishing. David lets bring in Wall Street Journal columnists dan henninger, kim strassel and bill mcgurn. Great to see you all. Dan, it was the u. N. That created israel, or modern israel, in 1947. And suddenly they decide its an Evil Occupier. When did they decide that their own creation was an Evil Occupier . Yeah, well, they did that a long time ago. It was probably all downhill at the United Nations after 1948. I mean, theres been no upside. We cant discount what somebody like secretarygeneral gutierrez says, what he called for there was a a humanitarian the ceasefire. And given what we have seen in the past 24 hours, the fact that israel is clearly going into gaza, think about it. The idea of a ceasefire is completely preposterous. A ceasefire means hamas fired on october 7th. Theyre now inside gaza, the suggestion is that israel is somehow supposed to stand back or stand down . That would mean accepting a hamas victory which they clearly cannot do despite the fact that there are protests in london, there are protest ts in Grand Central station the here overnight. Its clear that the israelis are not stepping back. And i think the burden now is going on the largely on the Biden Administration to stand with israel and try to resist these kind of conventional calls for a ceasefire. David but, bill, the idea hat the israelis are responsible for civilian deaths, they announce theyre coming, they announce the times when the palestinians who are not affiliated with hamas should get out. Of course, they dont let them get out, and egypt egypt is not taking them in, nor is jordan, by the way, which is basically a palestinian state. But the fact is i think and i know you do as well that that maas has more interest in palestinian deaths in gaza than israel does. Yes. I think you put your finger on it. The way i look at it, the first prong of the barbarity by hamas was the october 7th attacks. But its the second part now just as israel has reached a second stage, so has hamas. And they knew that israel would have to come in after a them, right . So they wanted to the second stage is craving palestinian deaths so they can use in messaging the war. Yes, israel has killed babies too like us. You cant say were ors worse. And you look at things you mentioned, theyve done nothing to help hamas has done nothing to help palestinians survive this. No Bomb Shelters for civilians, you know . David right. The leaders are down in the tunnel. Theyre well stock thed with food and fuel. They cut off the exits to egypt, for example. They dont want anyone there there. And they locate their arms and some of their headquarters under, like, hospitals and schools. So their goal is to maximize civilian deaths among palestinians because its good in the propaganda war. Its not good for israel. David by the way, a lo of their arms and supplies they have in these tunnels, probably came from us, or u. N. Was the interlock you are the or betwee. Kim, the u. N. Secretarygeneral made his comments in doha which, of course, is have to where a lot of hamas leaders hang out in their high priced hotels eating good fact. In fact, maybe right now gutierrez is having dinner with some of these people Smoking Cigars and so forth. I mean, he demands that there be a pause, but isnt that precisely and he also says what im doing, my main concern so to save the hostages. Isnt that precisely why hamas took those 200 hostages, because they wanted to the use them as a Bargaining Chips . Yeah. I mean, gutierrez is just wrong on so many levelings. You know, first of all, as bill just rightly said, tries to suggest that palestinian deaths are, is israels responsibility. Completely untrue. You also have him essentially saying now we must have a ceasefire. Basically what hes doing is offering an apology for hamas terrorists, allowing them to engage in this genocide and then denying israel the right to engage in selfdefense, a right that i would note every other free country is is allowed. And, yes, as he hangs out in doha, yes, as he also incorrectly misinterprets why gaza and why the palestinians and hamas took those hostages in the first place, to use as a bargaining chip. That is the brutal, ugly reality. And thats why theyve been letting one go here or there, in part because theyre trying to get a little bit of goodwill here or there for those aid trucks that have been coming through. But they intend to hold on to these people as a way to forestall and use public pressure to convince israel to stand down. We cannot let that happen. David dan, we only have 20 the seconds, but do you see any difference between the sec secretarygeneral and ill hand omar and the other defenders of hamas . I do see one big difference, and that is ill hand o hard is a democrat. And i think the reality of what she and the squad are saying and the fact these demonstrations, younger democrats are propalestinian, this is going to be a growing political problem for the Democratic Party because they do not want to be associated with antisemitism. And i think that is beginning to build, and its something theyre going to have to wrestle with in the future. David all right. When we come back, our panel reacts to some stunning muse out of the 2024 news out of the 2024 president ial campaign. Plus, the house elects a new speaker, at last. After
