Michael Cartwright leaves the Dunedin District Court after being sentenced for a charge laid under the Plumbers, Gasfitters and Drainlayers Act.
An experienced gas-fitter who failed to properly inspect a colleague's work has been ordered to pay nearly $90,000 in reparation and fines after a 12-year-old boy died because of his mistake.
Jesse Samuel, of Alexandra, was found slumped in a small shower unit at his family's holiday home in Haast on October 10, 2018.
Paramedics tried to save Jesse for almost an hour, but he was unable to be revived. An autopsy found he died of carbon monoxide poisoning, which was caused by the gas water heater installed in the shower unit.
