A gasfitter whose negligence led to the death of a 12-year-old boy will pay his family $70,000.
Michael Cartwright and Central Plumbing Limited – which trades as Laser Plumbing Alexandra – appeared in the Dunedin District Court this afternoon after pleading guilty to two charges under the Plumbers, Gasfitters and Drainlayers Act.
As well as the reparation order, Cartwright was fined $19,250 and his company $104,500. ....

An experienced gas-fitter who failed to properly inspect a colleague s work has been ordered to pay nearly $90,000 in reparation and fines after a 12-year-old boy died because of his mistake.
Jesse Samuel, of Alexandra, was found slumped in a small shower unit at his family s holiday home in Haast on October 10, 2018.
Paramedics tried to save Jesse for almost an hour, but he was unable to be revived. An autopsy found he died of carbon monoxide poisoning, which was caused by the gas water heater installed in the shower unit. ....

Mother of 12-year-old boy who died from carbon monoxide poisoning says the tragedy was 'preventable'

A mother has spoken out about her pain over the death of her son from carbon monoxide poisoning - saying the tragedy was preventable.
Justine Walker said her son Jesse Samuel, 12, had decided to shower in a temporary bathroom at their holiday house near the town of Haast, on New Zealand s south island, when tragedy struck on October 10, 2018.
Ms Walker, from New Zealand, found her eldest child s body on the bathroom floor half an hour later, the hot water still running.
The bathroom was fitted with a gas hot water unit, which she explains had been installed incorrectly, that allowed carbon monoxide to build up to deadly levels. ....

An Otago gasfitter has been fined more than $120,000 for incorrectly installing a gas water heater, leading to the death of a 12-year-old boy.

Gasfitter Michael Cartwright signed off on his co-worker s installation of the water heater despite never seeing the work.
The heater was not meant to be used in a bathroom.
Cartwright and the company, Laser Plumbing Alexandra, last year pleaded guilty to charges under the Plumbers, Gasfitters and Drainlayers Act. ....
