Now welcome thanks, thompson. Now welcome to saturday morning with esther and phil and the top story of the day is the 33 year old nurse lucy letby has been found guilty of murdering seven infants and attempting to kill six more whilst working on the Neonatal Ward at the countess of Chester Hospital , ward at the countess of Chester Hospital, making her the most Prolific British child serial killer in modern british history. The trial went on for over ten months, but why were such atrocities able to happen . And atrocities able to happen . And what needs to be done to ensure that it can never happen again . That it can never happen again . Well, were joined now by former metropolitan Police Detective peter blakesley. So detective peter blakesley. So peter, an inquiry has been launched. Welcome news. Oh, yes, indeed. Although im a little concerned that its not going to be a statutory inquiry. The government was swift to announce it yesterday. That was right. But announce it yesterday. That was right. But its announce it yesterday. That was right. But its not going to right. But its not going to have the powers to compel people to come and give evidence. To come and give evidence. However, there very much needs to be this inquiry because it will support the great work that the police did securing these the police did in securing these convictions. But the police did in securing these convictions. But and its a very big but myself and an increasing number of people that i speak to are quite frankly, sick to the back teeth of all these inquiries. When theyre announced, because what invariably happens is that somebody in a sharp suit stands on of a set steps at the end on top of a set steps at the end of it all, and says lessons will be learnt and quite frankly, theyre not so as a former detective , ive gathered some detective, ive gathered some evidence today to absolutely prove that because i deal with wed expect no less from you. Peter, thank you very much indeed. Peter, thank you very much indeed. Beverly allitt that indeed. Beverly allitt that odious person who murdered four babies when she was a nurse and injured many more, was convicted injured many more, was convicted in 1991. There was an inquiry into her actions and all of the background conducted by sir Cecil Clothier. The report was Cecil Clothier. The report was published in 1994. Im now going to read a couple of excerpts from a Statement Given to the house of commons by the then Health Secretary, virginia bottomley. Theyll chime , i bottomley. Theyll chime, i think, quite loudly. Bottomley. Theyll chime, i think, quite loudly. The first think, quite loudly. The first one is she said , the health one is she said, the Health Secretary. It is the duty of grantham and kesteven hospital where allitt worked and every other hospital to read, absorb and apply the lessons which sir Cecil Clothier and his team have so skilfully identified. We must so skilfully identified. We must leave nothing to chance in minimising the opportunities open to another beverley allitt. Well, i will leave it to your viewers and listeners to see if they agree with that or whether it was just words i guess. Peter the point would be is that as it said there, to minimise the opportunity , these minimise the opportunity, these people might say, well this its that was 30 years ago, you know , you cant never guarantee that these things will never happen again. But the fact that nothing again. But the fact that Nothing Happened for 30 years would indicate that maybe lessons were learned and that its impossible to stop it altogether. What would you what would you say to that . Number one, this report was only letby only 21 years before letby committed her atrocious acts. And thats not all my evidence. And thats not all my evidence. Okay. There is more words from the statement of the Health Secretary who said the clothier report identifies and criticises failures of management and Community Actions in the hospital. And it is important hospital. And it is important that lessons are learned from these throughout the service, there were many criticisms made yesterday throughout the media after the conviction of letby not most notably from paediatric consultants that worked with her and raised concerns and they spoke about failures of communication and management. Spoke about failures of communication and management. We communication and management. We shall see what the inquiry bnngs shall see what the inquiry brings forth. Should the police have been brought in much quicker . Oh undoubtedly. But that wasnt the polices fault. They can only act when an allegation is made to them. And in fact, i would like to say that i think Cheshire Police did a remarkable in very , very a remarkable job in very, very challenging circumstances here and now, if you will. Let me indulge. Is it also show that people cant be objective sometimes about their own staff and you did need that object of the police that should come in police that should have come in much as those much earlier. As soon as those senior said theres senior consultants said theres something and the something wrong here. And the same is on the shift, same person is on the shift, when are dying. When these children are dying. Words , the lessons in other words, the lessons werent and here is my werent learnt. And here is my final from the health final piece from the Health Secretarys statement of 1994, when she said , and apologies to when she said, and apologies to the family of the letby victims, if this chimes, i have nothing but respect for all of them. And the dignity that they have shown in the last few years and particular throughout the trial. I could not respect them more. The junior bottomley, the Health Secretary said the least. We owe those families of the victims is an explanation of how alex crimes went unchecked for so long and an assurance from which ihope long and an assurance from which i hope they will be able to take some comfort that Everything Possible will be done to prevent such a tragedy ever happening again. Hollow words , meaningless again. Hollow words, meaningless words fail. Two words. Words fail. Two words. I mean , i think you make i mean, i think you make a very good point about that , very good point about that, peter. I mean, is it always easy, though, to you know, its always easy after the event to say what should have happened and what shouldnt have happened. And, know, im happened. And, you know, im sure nobody at the hospital sure that nobody at the hospital was, you know, was trying to was, you know, was was trying to cover up its cover anything up. Its just that think that she that they didnt think that she was you some did , but some was you know, some did, but some clearly didnt. Was you know, some did, but some clearly didnt. I mean, is it the case that, you know, this is a question about being wise after the event and we shouldnt too be harsh on the people who were there time . Were there at the time . Ive been much worse ive been called much worse names in hindsight, engineer. But i will the words of the but i will let the words of the Health Secretary in 1994 speak for themselves. Lets look at for themselves. Lets look at what we now know about the what we now. Now know about the vile lucy letby. Lets look at what we know from the doctors and paediatricians who repeatedly tried to raise concerns and their words were either ignored or fell on deaf ears. We will be speaking to a psychologist later about the mind of the murderer. And obviously lucys mind here. But do you think this case was so chilling because she managed to deceive so many people . She was not, as people would have perceived , as a murderer. Her perceived, as a murderer. Her friends were standing by calling her innocent. Lucy vanilla lucy. They were thinking that she was a wonderful nurse. A wonderful nurse. Any pragmatic and experienced detective will tell you that its large , a waste of time its large, a waste of time trying to get in the head of someone who is so disturbed that their actions make no sense to regular detectives. Follow the regular detectives. Follow the evidence, build a case. And just like Cheshire Police did in this one, secure convictions. Peter, thanks ever so much for coming in this morning. Weve very much appreciate your expertise and also for going through those reports from 1994, where clearly what happened then has clearly happened again. Thank you. Thank you. And also ill add to fill in 2015, a set of guidelines were drawn up by the nhs, which was making it easier to whistle blow come forward, we will listen to you. That didnt happen. They made the people who did whistleblowers write a letter of apology to us saying that they shouldnt judged her shouldnt have judged her so quickly. Now quickly. But look now to look through todays top stories. Were delighted to be by were delighted to be joined by celebrity chef broadcaster celebrity chef and broadcaster kevin labour Kevin Woodford and former labour advisor matthew lazar. So chilling story, this one about lucy letby. I mean, its horrendous. You know , any form of murder you know, any form of murder is horrendous. But, you know, is horrendous. But, you know, theres something very, very , theres something very, very, very chilling about this particular one because its babies and because of the number involved and it is awful. And theyre going to investigate a more. Investigate a lot more. Theyre going to the now theyre going to the police are now investigating 40,000 admissions, neonatal admissions that this particular nurse was involved in. Right. Between 2012 and 2016. Mammoth task. Between 2012 and 2016. Mammoth task. So this between 2012 and 2016. Mammoth task. So this could only be the this could be the tip of the iceberg with this particular monster issue with her well. Monster issue with her as well. Ive got major issue with ive got a major issue with this. Tell you what it is. This. Ill tell you what it is. You know, i mean, my big problem with this is there we have this monster whos now been formally convicted murders and convicted of seven murders and seven attempted six. You know, as well, which havent been proven. But the fact of the matter is that on monday, this monster thats the only way of describing this woman. I wouldnt even call her a woman. This monster does not have to appear for the sentencing. And i think thats totally wrong. And no, alex chalk at the moment, just the secretary is planning to sort of try and change the law but why again, law on this. But why again, peters always peters right. Were always in a situation after the situation where its after the event now this is after the event and now this is after the event and now this is after the event. Event and now this is after the event. The parents have suffered event. The parents have suffered enough of this from this monster, and yet she shes even refusing to watch the sentencing on a video link. How can she possibly get away . The judge could get her for contempt of court and add an extra or up to two years extra on a sentence. And weve had on a sentence. And weve had this people turning this before. People not turning on sentencing and they should get put on an extra years. Where do we go with esther at the end of the you know, where is sentence . Is the sentence . Cant i dont i obviously cant i dont want to pre empt what the judge might do, but surely this must be a case of a whole life tariff, and therefore i think so. Therefore, mean, if so. And therefore, i mean, if this doesnt get a whole life tariff, difficult tariff, its very difficult to see what maybe the. No visiting rights for so no visiting rights for however mean, you might however long. I mean, you might say, you say, well, thats harsh, but you need something else. If she hasnt got. Absolutely. The is hasnt got. Absolutely. The is not turning up for the sentencing. You have to think of other things that she need other things that she will need to deprived because that to be deprived of because that is right. That to be deprived of because that is right. That its to be deprived of because that is right. That its the is not right. That its the ultimate snub to the victims families and justice. Families and its justice. Say, kevin, i mean, as you say, kevin, theres talk from alex talk i mean, as you say, kevin, theresif alk from alex talk i mean, as you say, kevin, theresif theresn alex talk i mean, as you say, kevin, theresif theres anything. K i mean, as you say, kevin, theresif theres anything weve about if theres anything weve donein about if theres anything weve done in legislation and obviously that would through. Obviously that would go through. Absolutely cross party. And, you know, speed , wouldnt know, basically speed, wouldnt it . Because this is just its just horrendous that weve seen. How drag somebody in to just horrendous that weve seen. How the drag somebody in to just horrendous that weve seen. How the sentence mebody in to just horrendous that weve seen. How the sentence ifebody in to just horrendous that weve seen. How the sentence if theyren to watch the sentence if theyre not do it . Not going to do it . Thats also youre going to have visiting rights, have to deprive visiting rights, buy else. You buy something else. Maybe you cant anymore a sentence cant at anymore to a sentence because going have the because shes going to have the longest but something because shes going to have the long does but something because shes going to have the long does to but something because shes going to have the long does to be something because shes goi
