Dont get me started because ijust dont get me started because i just find him so funny. Why does he have to be seen with his sleeves rolled up all the time . Oh, look sleeves the time . Oh, look sleeves rolled up. Sometimes he wears a tie, sometimes he doesnt. When he wears his jacket, his sleeves are rolled down. Getting down to business. Eamonn hes rolling his sleeves up getting up and hes getting down. But what . I dont like to be is treated like an idiot, that i have have this visual have to have this visual representation im working representation that im working hard, sleeves up. Hard, im rolling my sleeves up. You is very, silly you know, it is very, very silly. Ill be asking the chancellor that question one at a 6 45 today. Ahead of everything that you ask , why does rishi you want to ask, why does rishi roll sleeves up . Roll his sleeves up . Issue the nations itching to know about whats true most likely it could be his last one as leader because of course, theres a general election next yean theres a general election next year. The polls to be year. And if the polls are to be believed, could be a short believed, it could be a short time at the so what can we time at the helm. So what can we expect from the conference . Well a raft of new policies are being wheeled do wheeled out, designed to do better in those polls. And this morning, well be looking at what weve heard so far. And what weve heard so far. And what. What to expect right. So sunak will try to convince the country he is the man to stay at the stay at the top. The conservatives are trailing behind labour in the polls. Railway and workers are back railway and nhs workers are back on strike and the Prime Minister is under pressure to explain his thinking on future of the thinking on the future of the hs2, he just says there hs2, which he just says there are spades in the ground. Every time hes asked a question on hs2, he says, well, there are spades in the ground. Lets lets see if we can get an answer that doesnt have the spades the ground. Spades in the ground. Also be talking about hell also be talking about climate change. And another problem Prime Minister problem that the Prime Minister is fellow is facing from fellow conservative is the conservative members is the issue of tax cuts that thorny one to ease the burden of rising costs for families. Well, our deputy Political Editor tom hannood has sent his analysis. Day two at the its day two at the conservative Party Conference, and there is much to do on the agenda. Many people speaking on the main stage, a whole host of cabinet ministers, perhaps most notably the chancellor, jeremy hunt. Might he show some leg to the Party Faithful offer some red meat to those here at the conservative Party Conference . Else might he talk a little bit about the tax cuts . Well, we heard michael gove hint at that yesterday , although the prime yesterday, although the Prime Minister has, of course , been minister has, of course, been saying the best tax cuts that could possibly be offered is us getting inflation down. Indeed halving it by the years end. The best tax cut that we can deliver right now is to halve inflation. Ian now thats something that im deeply committed to. Its the first of my five priorities. Why . Because thats can help people thats how we can help people with cost living. We just with the cost of living. We just want put more money in want to put more money in peoples pockets. Best peoples pockets. And the best way to do that right now is through halving inflation. And that conservative that is a deeply conservative approach my approach to this. And my colleagues that this colleagues understand that this is thatcher did. Colleagues understand that this is but thatcher did. Colleagues understand that this is but the thatcher did. Colleagues understand that this is but the chancellor her did. Colleagues understand that this is but the chancellor is r did. Colleagues understand that this is but the chancellor is up d. Colleagues understand that this is but the chancellor is up on but the chancellor is up on the after midday, but the main stage after midday, but also claire also speaking is claire coutinho. New energy coutinho. The new energy secretary. Could she be offering some more to the Party Faithful here about how to bring down bills . Quite possibly. Of course, a big theme of what the Prime Minister has been saying in the last few days has been moving away from hurtling towards net zero at the speed we were originally going to it. Clearly, claire coutinho, whos a close ally of the Prime Minister, will be aligned on that. And perhaps give more detail as to how the United Kingdom can get to net zero. Yes, but in a way that is perhaps a little more pragmatic. So might the conservatives argue and certainly less costly . Well, there is so much more going on besides , last night it going on besides, last night it was the 1922 Committee Reception session where we heard from many conservative mps and quite a bit of wine was drunk. That, after of wine was drunk. That, after all, is very often the heart of these Party Conferences. Less so these Party Conferences. Less so what goes on the main stage and more what goes on in the fairly boozy evenings and indeed at all of the fringe events too. But certainly a busy day to come here at conservative Party Conference in manchester, day two. And as we say , we look for and as we say, we look for your views and some of you have already sent in comments on what you want to hear from the conservatives this week in amman. Good morning, isabel. Top of good morning, isabel. Top of the morning to both of you. So the morning to both of you. So we have a calamity coming up. Dont we . Now the conservative Party Conference. Ive been a conservative voter all of my life, you are testing me. Life, but you are testing me. Im telling you, i really testing me. We have to have a reality check year. We reality check this year. We must. Imperative. We have must. Its imperative. We have to deal with number one to deal with the number one issue, is immigration. Issue, and that is immigration. Ian now they talk and they talk, but they talk down to us. We really need some changes. I want really need some changes. I want to see people. I want real people. Maybe real people like myself get to that conference, stand up and say, this is what you need to do. Youre trying to make yourselves a four year career, a load of money, career, make a load of money, write book, and on to be write a book, and go on to be a director. Were in a mess. This country is in a dire, dire mess at the moment. We need some action. Hi, isabel hayman. Great show. Regarding the conservative Party Conference. Id like them to recognise the huge financial pressures. Net zero is id like ulez abolished immediately. Id also like to see a clear uk wide policy on appropriate use of 20 mile an hour limits. And i want to hear strategies that get tough on knife crime and mass illegal migration. Finally id like inheritance tax abolished or the thresholds raised significantly higher. Significantly higher. And isabel, im banned from newcastle loving the show. One thing i want to see from the tory Party Conference this week is the complete scrapping of all net zero targets that have been made mandatory because of the paris climate agreement. I believe that net zero is a complete tax on the working class as people like myself simply cannot afford £15,000 for a heat pump or £30,000 for an electric car. Hi , eamonn. Hi, isabel. How hi, eamonn. Hi, isabel. How are you guys doing . Im william pickup from glossop in derbyshire. And im a derbyshire. And im a conservative party member. You asked me to let you know what i was hoping would come from this years was hoping would come from this years conservative Party Conference. Well its quite clear theyve got to work out how on earth theyre going to stand a chance at next years general election. For me, its really clear theyre going to have to announce a policy that if they win the next general election, they will come out of the echr and get a grip on this ridiculous illegal immigration. Now, its nice to hear straight talking from you guys. Very much appreciate that nice range of views there. Lets cross to our senior political commentator, nigel nelson, whos there at the scene. Hes at the there at the scene. Hes at the we have a gb news stand, as i understand, nigel, there at the at the conference. We do indeed. And im sitting we do indeed. And im sitting on it very good. Very good. What do you make it about what youre hearing so far . Are well, i mean, the we havent heard very much so far that theyve cut speeches down to 15 minutes, which is a real blessing. There used to be about an hour long, but so far weve not heard a great deal of policy. The first one were likely to hear really that matters will be today with with when jeremy hunt speaks, the chancellor. So that hes talking about increasing the minimum wage to £11 an hour. Thats only a few pence more. So its not going to make a huge difference. The big question is going to be what hes going to do about benefit claimants. Now hes theres talk of a clampdown on them. Jeremy hunt is saying so far that he wont release any details until he makes his Financial Statement later this yean Financial Statement later this year. But but it does sound bad news if youre claiming benefits i but nigel, you and i are off a vintage where you have heard this at every single conservative Conference Since the year dot. Theyre going to clamp down on fraudulent benefits. Yes. I mean, im benefits. Yes. I mean, im looking at this and im thinking , has this not been done . Did they not do this the last time and the time before that and the time before that . Yeah, this is slightly different. This is not this is not fraudulent benefits as such. What theyre doing is because theyve run out ideas, theyve run out of ideas, theyre dusting off plans that theyre dusting off plans that they already had had ready to go. So the one that it looks like jeremy hunt is doing is to try and target the 100,000 people who are not working. Now, people who are not working. Now, they may not be working for a variety of reasons. They may be sick, they may be unable to work, cant find jobs, but basically what what happened was. Teresa coffey , when she was was. Teresa coffey, when she was working pensions secretary last year , raised this issue and what year, raised this issue and what she wanted to do was lower the threshold at which you have to go to weekly jobcentre interview news. So the threshold , for news. So the threshold, for instance, was £494. So if youve got any anything up to that, you didnt have to go for an interview. You she she wants to wanted to lower that to £355, which would catch an extra 114,000 people. Well, now , the 114,000 people. Well, now, the problem with this, the idea obviously is you go for the interviews and they try and find you a better job than perhaps youre working part time for low wages. They look for a better job for you so you dont have to stay on benefits. That sounds, in principle a good thing in danger about doing it is it actually does lower wages because you have a bigger pool of people who will end up working for less money. Mhm. Mhm. Mhm. Okay, nigel, thank you very much. And a reminder to everybody at home, we will be speaking to the chancellor himself whos making that big speech at conference. Hell be joining us in around half an hours joining us in around half an hours time. And if youre heading out the door, dont forget you can keep following us on and online as well as on radio and online as well as on radio and online as well as on the if you are lucky on the tv. If you are lucky enough to stay tuned on your box this morning. Course, you dont have to of course, you dont have to be out door to be heading out the door to listen to the radio. A lot of people going to be moving people are going to be moving around house, going, around their house, going, brushing a brushing their teeth, having a shave. While the thing shave. You know, while the thing doing ablutions. Yes yes. Doing their ablutions. Yes yes. On the listening in the car on the school my kids listen. On school run. My kids listen. On the school run. You make your kids listen to us there. They say they say, alexa, play. Is that not like Child Cruelty something . Cruelty or something . Hear them on the they like to hear them on the voice. So so wait minute. A so wait a minute. Wait a minute. Could you speak to alexa in car . In your car . No, they do that then. Well, no, they do that then. And now theyve got hooked on to it doing and now it through doing that. And now they in the car. They like it in the car. Gosh, over 60,000 Junior Doctors and consultants will be taking at picket taking a stand at picket lines across country today. This across the country today. This pay across the country today. This pay conditions goes pay dispute and conditions goes on and on. And on. Well, last week, nearly 27,000 nhs staff were absent from work due to industrial action. And that comes at a cost with delayed appointments and longer waiting lists for treatment. Nhs longer waiting lists for treatment. Nhs england says more than a million acute in patient and out patient appointments have had to be rescheduled since strike action began. Theyre very very shortly will be very, very shortly we will be getting reaction from one of those Junior Doctors. First, this report from but first, this report from our National ReporterTheo Chikomba. Chikomba. If you go to the well, if you go to the hospital , theres no theres no hospital, theres no theres no guarantee youre going to be treated within, say , eight hours treated within, say, eight hours time. Theyll only make sense. Time. Theyll only make sense. February 20th, 22 neil has been receiving care from his home, which he describes as a godsend. Now he avoids long waits and says it puts less pressure on his family to take him to the hospital for routine checks and treatment. Checks and treatment. At the change. My dressing on may fourth, every every tuesday, which is fantastic , you know, which is fantastic, you know, instead of having to trail up to royal blackburn or maybe even go as far as burnley. So thats as far as burnley. So thats great to have a nurse coming to a change. Change me bandage and me and my own home as a patient of the Royal Blackburn Hospital, clinical home care was set up for him to treat his severe eczema. Eczem a. Eczema. It does make a massive difference , particularly to difference, particularly to people like neil because hes hes its very difficult for him to mobilise outside of his home and does impact on his family as well. But , you well. But, you know, so for people to have to get to the hospital each time they needed treatment is quite a big strain on them really together with the condition that theyre already facing across the country, Junior Doctors will be taking strike for action the seventh time and it will be the second joint walkout for Junior Doctors and consultants as consultants pay and consultants as consultants pay has been falling , more and pay has been falling, more and more consultants are choosing to leave the nhs, leave the uk and go and work in other countries where they are paid fairly and their terms and their conditions of working are better because they havent got such a staffing crisis in the uk. Were left with an nhs that has a workforce crisis. Because of this governments policies. Of this governments policies. That means we never have that means that we never have enough doctors and those that are working here are trying to cover the work for the doctors that arent there. That arent there. As for neil, he says the two hour appointments he gets at his home are invaluable at a time when nhs services and staff say they are feeling the pressure. Theo chikomba gb news blackburn got a Junior Doctor in the studio. Pasha mukherjee is with his this morning for this. So pasha , will you be on a picket line today . Today . I will not be. I will actually be spending my day revising for a mandatory exam which we dont get any extra time. We only four days to time. We only get four days to do these exam revisions. And do these exam revisions. And actually ive been spending the last six months revising three hours every day after work. But this mandatory medical exams and this mandatory medical exams and this is not just the case for myself. This is the for case many other doctors who do spend extra hours outside of the working hours revising for these exams , preparing and, you know, exams, preparing and, you know, constantly upskilling themselves, which as you know, were not compensated for. Gosh. So thats a new actually, i havent heard
