Glasgow dig hailed as 'one of world's most important' gets underway close to Hampden

PICTURES show one of the most 'significant' historical digs underway as bemused bowlers look on.
Archaeologists began digging on Monday at the site where the first game of football is thought to have been played in a park close to Hampden Bowling Club on the Southside.
Pictures taken by the Glasgow Times' photographer show small teams at work.
Dr Paul Murtagh, of Archaeology Scotland, told the Glasgow Times earlier this week: "This is the site where the passing and running game was first played and where modern football was born.
"This site is the place where the idea of a purpose-built football ground originated, with a pavilion in the corner, a grand stand built to host spectators and the first use of turnstiles for entry."
