A local Illinois politician is calling on the Governor to keep his promises on redistricting reform. Every 10 years following the census, every State in the Union redraws its district maps to reflect the new population data. Traditionally, the political party in control of the state's legislature decides how the districts are drawn. They then use a tactic called gerrymandering to bend and twist districts to give their party the upper hand in elections for the next decade. Politicians on both sides of the aisle have called for independent commissions to draw the district maps instead of politicians. Among these was then gubernatorial candidate J.B. Pritzker, who pledged in 2018 to veto any new map drawn by the legislature and called for a constitutional amendment to use an independent commission.
