'The loss of life, over 85,000, was not inevitable'


Meanwhile the government which utterly mismanaged the pandemic has been preoccupied with finalising a miserable Brexit trade deal to replace our membership of the European Single Market, the world’s largest free trade area, which was partly a British achievement launched by Margaret Thatcher. 
For three decades it has made things easier for us all. Now we have spent tens of billions of pounds, employing tens of thousands of civil servants and expensive consultants, just to make things more difficult for people and businesses. 
When vaccines eventually let us move around safely again, we are going to realise the crucial rights which we lost on January 1. We no longer enjoy freedom of movement in Europe. Young people leaving our schools and universities no longer have the right to go and work in any country they wish.
