Governor J.B. Pritzker said earlier this week the state is set to move forward to Phase Five of his Restore Illinois Plan on June 11th. Over half the state's population is fully vaccinated, per the CDC, and COVID-19 numbers are declining across the state. Phase Five is a full re-opening, with all sectors of the economy, businesses, schools, and recreation resuming normal operations- with new safety guidance and procedures. The Wabash County Health Department announced four new cases of COVID-19 in the past week, bringing its total to 1,310; two people were in isolation. Wayne County did not release an update. The state Department of Public Health announced 478 new cases of COVID-19 yesterday and seven additional deaths. Statewide totals sat at 1,383,065 cases and 22,842 deaths. The Southern Region had a positivity rate of 1.3 percent on May 30th, down from 1.4 percent on the 29th. The Fairfield City Band will have its first performance of the year tonight at 7 on the Wayne County Courthouse lawn, weather permitting. The band is directed by Josh Livesay, and tonight's concert will feature music popular in the 1940s. This is the first of five scheduled concerts, each with different themes, culminating in a patriotic performance in early July. Illinois State Police Zone 7 Investigations is investigating an officer-involved shooting incident in Jefferson County. Reports indicate a Mt. Vernon Police Officer exchanged gunfire with 55-year-old Fredrick Goss after he fled on foot when officers responded to a call of an armed robbery. Goss was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, and the officer was uninjured. Peoples National Bank is accepting applications for the Walter R. Davis and Marie Foley Davis Memorial Scholarships through June 15th. Applications may be picked up at the PNB Trust Department. Recipients will be announced later this month, and multiple scholarships worth at least $500 will be available. River stages as of early this morning: the Little Wabash east of Fairfield stands at 16.47 feet, below the 17 ft. flood stage. Meanwhile, the Skillet Fork at Wayne City has a reading of 5.64 feet (flood stage is 15 ft.). The Little Wabash below Clay City is at 7.48 feet (flood stage is 18 ft.). Bonpas Creek at Browns reads 15.00 feet, and the Little Wabash at Main Street in Carmi reads 19.20 feet. The Wabash River at Mt. Carmel sits at 9.85 feet.
