Heated exchanges as council buys electric bikes for its PCSOs

A BAND of councillors has backed buying a pair of electric pedal bikes for its roaming PCSOs – but not before a heated debate over the move.
Thornaby Town Council voted to buy the powered cycles on Monday night to help its two police support officers, John Curry and Rob Peacock, get around the town faster to respond to problems.
However, there was strong disagreement from some members – particularly in the wake of police tax rises in recent years.
“What comes next? Buy them a squad car?” said Cllr Glenn Eastick.
Thornaby Mayor Steve Walmsley said the two PCSOs provided a “real service” to the town picking up information and helping vulnerable folk.
