As the COVID-19 pandemic spread last spring, Family Promise of Greater Des Moines, which helps homeless families, could no longer house families overnight in its network of 15 metro churches when they closed their doors to prevent coronavirus infections among their congregations.
Family Promise provided shelter instead in the organization’s day center. The group served about as many families, 27, last year as it did in 2019, said director Jim Cain, but the new arrangement increased costs by tens of thousands of dollars.
