Stonehenge Tunnel HIGHWAYS England is to press on with plans for the construction of a tunnel near Stonehenge on Salisbury Plain despite a High Court ruling last Friday that has paused the project. The agency said it will proceed with handing out contracts process for the A303 Amesbury to Berwick Down upgrade past the World Heritage Site. The £1.7 billion project aims to reduce traffic on the A303 and includes a two-mile tunnel near the 5,000-year-old neolithic monument. Following a High Court ruling against Transport Secretary Grant Shapps’ granting of a Development Consent Order for the transformational scheme, plans for early works and archaeological fieldwork have now been paused.
