Historic find hides amid receipts, pamphlets in East Greenwich museum
EAST GREENWICH — The coronavirus pandemic had really slowed things down at the Varnum Armory Museum last summer.
So curator Patrick Donovan thought it would be a good time to sort through some old boxes of documents and artifacts and decide what to throw away and what to place in the museum's new archival storage system.
One Saturday, he found himself alone at the museum with boxes and boxes from the collection left behind by an old Varnum board member who had died years ago.
He had been sifting through musty old papers for five or six hours. An open garbage bag sat beside his chair, ready to receive history's refuse.
