The holiday season is about family, gifts, good food and hopefully, some down time. But when I think of more sacred moments, the times that felt spiritual, I think of the Christmas Eve service at my parents’ church. The evening would close with everyone in a circle, unlit candles in-hand, and singing Away in the Manger. One-by-one, the candles would be lit, until each face glowed in the darkness. People would often cry during this part, and usually, it was from a place of pain. Losing a spouse or loved one would make the song more bitter than sweet. Even the story itself, a family in crisis refused help, can touch a nerve or two.
