Sir Bob Russell set to work cleaning up Holy Trinity Church in Colchester, a kind act of public duty which was to become the template of his life. He went on to be elected as a Colchester councillor, mayor and leader of the council before becoming MP for Colchester for 18 years and being knighted for public service to his home town.
