“It was very much the hope that the reopening of schools in September would have a stabilising effect and for some young people that was indeed the case,” says Dr Woodman. “But for other young people the increased anxiety about being out in the community and at school resulted in an increase in mental health difficulty.” She believes that it’s crucial for resilience to be embedded in school structures and approaches, through peer mentoring programmes, mindfulness and relaxation techniques, exercise and developing safe spaces for young people within the school environment – “places where they can go when they feel overwhelmed”.
