Its accountability should primarily be to the people of South Africa. The second relates to the SABC’s independence from political and commercial interests. The third is about its funding, and the fourth the broadcaster’s regulation, which must be strengthened. The SABC has been in deep financial trouble for many years, a period that has also been characterised by unstable leadership, both at board and management level. The corporation’s instability can be traced back to politicians who have had their hands around its neck, suffocating it.
