barefoot, no food, no water, no supplies. herdman was on a weekend trip with his buddy, fellow firefighter tyler beyer, and they were camping in a remote area almost twice the size of the grand canyon. >> we would blow whistles every now and then to see if we hear anybody, stop, listen. all your traditional ways of looking for anybody that may be injured. >> reporter: it took beyers two days to report out of the back country to report herdman missing. >> being up here for three days without any food, shelter or additional clothing or anything like that, it is going to be a tough environment to stay in. >> reporter: herdman's wife and 6-year-old daughter expected him home last sunday on father's day. and they're still waiting. >> i have no doubt that he -- he could survive out there for -- for weeks. >> herdman is a veteran firefighter and paramedic, a skilled outdoorsman who knew the area well. now there is a creek near the campsite where he was last seen.
