Google has added a 'Save to Photos' button for directly saving the photos you receive via Gmail to Google Photos. The feature is currently available only for pictures in JPEG format and there is no information when other photo and video formats would be supported by this feature. The 'Save to Photos' button co-exists with the already present 'Add to Drive' button while viewing attachments.
