Gmail blocks more than 100 million phishing attempts daily, says Google

Google has said that every day, Gmail blocks more than 100 million phishing attempts and Google Play Protect scans over 100 billion apps for malware and other issues, as cyber attacks by nation-states and criminals are increasingly becoming brazen and effective.
The past six months have seen some of the most widespread and alarming cyber attacks against the digital infrastructure in history -- against public utilities, private sector companies, government entities and people living in democracies around the world.
"We are deeply concerned by these trends. Security is the cornerstone of our product strategy. We have dedicated teams like Project Zero who focus on finding and fixing vulnerabilities across the web to make the internet safer for all of us," said Kent Walker, SVP of Global Affairs at Google.

Personal cloud: Storage full: how Google, Apple, and Microsoft are egging users on to buy personal cloud

Apple CEO Steve Jobs introduces Apple's internet storage service, iCloud, during the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference in San Francisco on May 6, 2011.
Synopsis
E-mails, music, videos, and photographs — they need storage. While enterprises may remain the biggest driver in cloud adoption, individuals, over the next five years, will be a key target segment. As if selling users’ digital selves for ad dollars wasn't enough, many in Big Tech are intent on making money from their digital shelves, too. Here’s the how and why.
Google introduced Gmail on Fool’s Day in 2004. At the time, many reckoned it was a joke. It obviously wasn’t. You needed to be invited by someone who was already using the service to sign up for it, and soon enough, there was an almighty scramble for invites. The biggest lure over competition, primarily Hotmail and Yahoo!, was storage. Google underlined this differentiator in the press release announcing the launch: “… a free search-based webmail

With an aim to make Gmail your 'Home for work', Google is now making its Chat and Rooms feature available to all of its users. Earlier, this feature was exclusively available only to the enterprise users but now, Google will now make the integrated workspace feature available for personal account holders as well.

The goal here, is to let users get everything done in one page without the user having to keep switching between other tabs. The 2 new tabs that have joined the existing 'Mail' and 'Meet' tabs include 'Chat' and 'Rooms' tabs. The "Chat” is where you can message individual and small groups, while “Rooms” are dedicated to larger conversations with shared chat, files, and tasks. The Rooms tab works similar to how Slack does.

Gmail for iOS Updated for the First Time in Three Months

Gmail for iOS Updated for the First Time in Three Months
Monday March 1, 2021 9:29 am PST by Sami Fathi
After neglecting the app for several months, Google today finally updated Gmail on the App Store for the first time in exactly three months.
Today's update, version 6.0.210124, says it includes "Bug fixes and performance improvements," but it is a notable update given it's the first one the app has seen in months. Alongside Gmail, Google Meet, Google Sheets, Google Docs, Google Calander, and Google Tasks have also received app updates today, with Google Tasks adding new iOS 14widgets.
As with nearly all Google apps on the ‌App Store‌, Gmail had remained without a proper app update for months. Initial speculation was that Google was holding back app updates as a way to delay having to disclose to users its privacy practices. Updates for Google's more popular apps have started rolling out over the past few weeks, and Gmail is certainly one of the most high-profile ones to finally see an update.

Before you start thinking of popping Gmail in the bin, it's worth remembering that data collection is something almost all technology firms do as this is what allows them to provide a personalised experience. If you search for "email from Dad with attachment" in Gmail – to find that content, Google will need to scan your contacts, scour your entire inbox, and skim through the content of the emails to work out which ones have an attachment included.

Microsoft already offers the ability to give an email that's landed in your inbox a quick thumbs-up, but this upcoming upgrade makes things much more interactive with users also able to add other icons such as love or laughter. It's very similar to what many text messaging apps on your smartphone and social media platforms already offer and should make it far less laborious to reply to people.

After analysing a staggering 1.2billion bogus messages over a five-month period, the teams found that those in the US were the biggest targets. In fact, of all the dangerous messages sent a whopping 42 percent were aimed at the inboxes of Americans.
However, don't feel too smug if you live in the UK as Brits were the next big targets with 10 percent of emails being pushed to users. Next, it was Japan with five percent of all attacks.

Vast Majority of Phishing and Malware Campaigns Are Small-Scale and Short-Lived

By Ionut Arghire on February 13, 2021
Researchers from Google and Stanford University have analyzed the patterns of more than 1.2 billion email-based phishing and malware attacks targeting Gmail users, and found that most attack campaigns are short-lived and sent to fewer than 1,000 targets.
Users in North America are targeted the most, they found, with 42% of the observed attacks targeted users in the United States, 10% hitting people in the United Kingdom, and 5% aimed at users in Japan.
Most of the analyzed 406,002 phishing campaigns and 1,724,160 malware campaigns, the researchers say, were short, with fewer than 1000 users targeted by 91% of the phishing emails and 99% of the malware emails.

Gmail on iOS 14 Update Warning Pop Up Issue Persists

10 February 2021, 9:11 pm EST By
Google's suite of applications that runs on Apple devices on iOS 14 is experiencing several "Update Warning" pop-ups as the company has not yet updated its applications to match the Apple Privacy Labels settings. It has been several months since Google updated the application for the latest iOS version of the iPhones and iPads but is somehow refusing to release a new version.
According to Spencer Dailey, Google may be siding with Facebook in disagreeing with the Cupertino giant to reveal information whenever it uses a phone setting or does not want to update for the iOS. Notably, Apple is somehow releasing an update for its iOS 14 software on a monthly or two-month basis that is now on the 14.5 version.
