CHARLOTTE — So ends a disappointing Michigan State season under Tom Izzo — 20 wins, a record 26th straight NCAA Tournament for Izzo and an NCAA win aren’t bad, but this was a preseason top-five team — and resumes the question of what Izzo can do to get MSU back where it used to be.His program last made the Final Four in 2019 and, in the four tournaments since then, has not been higher than a No. 7 seed. MSU has gone 4-4 in the tournament and has made the second weekend just once. The Spartans (20-15) had double-digit losses for the fourth straight season, something that had never happened previously under Izzo in a tenure that started in 1995.He has had some impactful transfers, most recently Joey Hauser and Tyson Walker, but he needs to be more embracing of the portal moving forward. Next year’s team loses Walker (24 points in Saturday’s 85-69 loss to UNC) and Malik Hall (17 points, nine rebounds), and almost certainly point guard A.J. Hoggard (three points, four assists, three turnovers, 1-for-10 shooting) even though he has one year of eligibility left. Look for that to be utilized on another campus.The point should be fine with Jeremy Fears and Tre Holloman splitting the job. The talent level will still be high with another good recruiting class coming in, if Jaden Akins (11 points against UNC) returns and nothing surprising happens with returning sophomores Xavier Booker and Coen Carr.The ingredients could be there for a team that at the least won’t have to play a No. 1 seed on the first weekend of the tourney — if Izzo adds wisely among guys who are on other teams right now. Whether he likes that idea, and the reality of college basketball today, or not.
