There are more than 48,000 children in foster care in Australia currently and the reality is that the overwhelming majority of these children will not finish school. In fact 75% of children in the care system will not complete 12 years of school education and 92% are below the average reading level at age seven. A low level of literacy is an indicator of poor health associated with disadvantage and leads to a higher chance of homelessness. The aim of National Pyjama Day is to raise funds for The Pyjama Foundation's Love of Learning program, which sees children in foster care matched with a volunteer known as a Pyjama Angel to help build their confidence, improve literacy and develop life skills
