Hydro-Québec pays $18 million to settle 11-year-old class action suit

Hydro-Québec will pay $18 million to settle a class action suit launched more than a decade ago concerning late payment fees charged to some customers between 2008 and 2010.
An agreement to settle is expected to be approved in Quebec Superior Court on May 31.

If the plaintiffs had won their suit in court, the final settlement, with legal fees and interest, could have reached $100 million, the utility said.
“Despite the fact we maintain our practices conformed with the law, we took the decision to conclude an agreement in order to reduce financial risk,” Hydro-Québec spokesperson Cendrix Bouchard said in a statement.
