IBM grants Poughkeepsie schools $500,000 in cybersecurity services

Eric Rosser received a call early in the morning on Feb. 25, 2020.
The Poughkeepsie school district was hit with a cyberattack. Employees couldn't access one of their servers.
Luckily for the new superintendent, it was only a storage server that included lesson plans and inconsequential files. But the attack triggered an in-depth analysis of the systems in place to protect the district virtually.
"It's extremely concerning," Rosser said. "Thankfully we took the precautionary measures prior to COVID entering our lives ... We were able to use that time to strengthen our system and to strengthen our cyber attack protection."
The district lost the information on the compromised server, and purchased a new one along with programming to strengthen its defense. Rosser noted that no human resource, payroll or student information was compromised during the attack.
