Poughkeepsie SD gets financial boost from IBM to beef up cybersecurity News 12 Staff Updated on:Jun 03, 2021, 5:33pm EDT Amid a spate of ransomware attacks hitting different industries, a school district in Dutchess County is getting a boost from a big name in tech to beef up its cybersecurity. Web thieves are preying on anyone they can to get cash, even the Poughkeepsie City School District. In February 2020, Superintendent Dr. Eric Rosser says a ransomware attack locked teachers out from accessing certain servers, although it did not breach student information or other sensitive items. Just like experts suggest, the district did not pay up, and instead began beefing up its cybersecurity.
Eric Rosser received a call early in the morning on Feb. 25, 2020. The Poughkeepsie school district was hit with a cyberattack. Employees couldn't access one of their servers. Luckily for the new superintendent, it was only a storage server that included lesson plans and inconsequential files. But the attack triggered an in-depth analysis of the systems in place to protect the district virtually. "It's extremely concerning," Rosser said. "Thankfully we took the precautionary measures prior to COVID entering our lives ... We were able to use that time to strengthen our system and to strengthen our cyber attack protection." The district lost the information on the compromised server, and purchased a new one along with programming to strengthen its defense. Rosser noted that no human resource, payroll or student information was compromised during the attack.
Education leaders say that July 1 may not be a realistic deadline for many districts to meet Cardona's goals or execute the best possible plans for spending their federal grants over three years. "If we really want thoughtful stakeholder feedback and input, and we really are committed to spending these dollars as intelligently as possible, we're going to have to push back that July 1 requirement," said Joe Ricca, president of the Lower Hudson Council of School Superintendents, which includes school chiefs in Westchester, Rockland, Dutchess and Putnam counties. "School districts are still working on bringing their children back full time; they're still working on all the complexities associated with the pandemic," Ricca, the White Plains superintendent, said. "We don't want to rush this process and end up with shoddy planning. Every American is invested in this process, right? These are our tax dollars."
