Amid a spate of ransomware attacks hitting different industries, a school district in Dutchess County is getting a boost from a big name in tech to beef up its cybersecurity.
Web thieves are preying on anyone they can to get cash, even the Poughkeepsie City School District.
In February 2020, Superintendent Dr. Eric Rosser says a ransomware attack locked teachers out from accessing certain servers, although it did not breach student information or other sensitive items.
Just like experts suggest, the district did not pay up, and instead began beefing up its cybersecurity.

Experts discuss vulnerability of critical infrastructure after Colonial Pipeline cyberattack

Hospitals, water supplies and public transportation are all connected to the internet - and the recent cyberattack on the Colonial Pipeline showed just how vulnerable critical infrastructure really is.
A simulation at IBM's Cyber Range showed News 12 what ransomware attacks looks like. Companies become locked out of their computers and systems as hackers leave a note for a hefty ransom.
"I think we are at a point with ransomware where it's become a critical pandemic," says Nick Rossman, global threat intelligence lead at IBM Security X-Force.

Google, Dropbox and YouTube top three brands spoofed in 2020: IBM

Google, Dropbox and YouTube were the top three brands spoofed in spam in 2020, according to IBMâs latest security report.
IBM notes that threat actors use spoofing technology and social media giants based on their popularity and usersâ expectation of accessing these assets digitally.
âIn addition, spoofing email and email-associated platforms such as Google Gmail or Microsoft 365 is a common threat actor technique,â the report outlines.
Other technology brands that made the top list include Facebook, Amazon, Apple, Microsoft, PayPal and WhatsApp. Aside from PayPal, all of these companies had made the list in 2019 as well.
Interestingly, Adidas was the only non-technology company to make the top ten list of most spoofed brands.
