Bleak - a coffin is carried through Canvey during a protest in May 1973 Canvey residents have never been afraid to make their voices heard in various protests through the years. Last week, the Echo reported on plans to more than double the amount of fuel stored at the Oikos plant on the island. The announcement has prompted anger from campaigners, who have called it a “recipe for disaster”. If given the green light by the Government, Oikos would expand its storage facility from 290,000 m3 to 600,000 m3 at the site off Haven Road. The plans also involve new giant tanks on the south side of the estate, with new pipes and loading arms to move fuel in and out from the existing jetties.
