When I quarantined for two weeks in Los Angeles this winter, I saw five roaches in my Airbnb. My âguest houseâ was technically a converted garage, but since the bed was comfortable and my host complied with safety protocolsâshe arranged no-contact check-in and left me plenty of hand sanitizerâI didnât bother leaving a bad Airbnb review. It wasnât worth bringing down her 4.7-star rating. Instead, I said it was âcozy.â Normally, Iâm unsparing when it comes to feedback. I once left a negative review about a smelly Airbnb that no combination of scented candles and room spray could cure, mainly to warn future guests. But for many hosts, renting out their homes during the pandemic is no longer just a side incomeâitâs a lifeline. As we continue to look out for each other in these challenging times for the hospitality industry, is it wrong to give a small business a negative review?
