"I didn't know him personally very at all," said the 38-year-old after finishing the first round Thursday. "I just knew he kind of meant a lot to Metro Detroit golf community, and I just thought it would be a nice thing to do and just kind of honor his memory." Once Stuard teed off, however, things didn't go as well. He shot a 1-under-par 71, eight shots off clubhouse leader Davis Thompson. He opened with a birdie on No. 1 then birdied on the seventh and 14th holes. He also had two bogeys, on Nos. 10 and 18. It was a performance far from his opening round in 2019. Two years ago, he finished the first round with a 6-under 66. He finished that tournament tied for fifth with a 17-under 271. Still, Stuard wasn't deterred.
