The Criminal Justice Advisory Council Board voted on ways to improve conditions at the Oklahoma County Detention Center. Officials said the jail was built as a maximum-security building but most of the inmates don't qualify for needing that. They voted to come up with a plan to give the jail trust in November. They are looking into three options, either renovate the inside, add an annex building or just completely demolish the jail and start over."The jail is really not equipped to handle somebody who has substance abuse problems even medical problems," said Tim Tardibone, the board’s executive director. Tardibone said the jail has needed a remodel for years now. "Remember the jail was built for 1,200 maximum security cells, and that's not the majority of the people in the jail right now," Tardibone said. Tardibone said the jail was built about 30 years ago and wasn't built to offer adequate fresh air spaces or an actual medical unit. "The design of that building makes it very difficult to staff and provide the necessary services from food, to medicine from time out of your cell," he said.Not to mention the frequent times inmates have escaped from the building. "It's an example of what not to do. We want it to show OKC of an example of what to do," said Jones Semtner, FSB Architects and Engineers consultant. Semtner is on the project and he is the one who will decide if it needs to be torn down completely, remolded, or have an annex added to it. "What are the options, what are the issues, where can we go from here," Semtner said.They also want to have programs where inmates can better prepare to get back into the community."Education, treatment, time out for GED, job training," Tardibone said.They will give their proposal to the jail trust in November and the jail trust will vote on it then. But ultimately the taxpayers will be paying for all the updates and changes.
