McLain was alert and conscious, and complaining of back and knee pain, the sheriff's office said. Fire department personnel extricated Chordas from his vehicle with the Jaws of Life. He was transported to Wilson Medical Center in Johnson City, where he was pronounced dead around 7:35 a.m. McLain was also taken to Wilson Medical Center. His condition was not available. Police said a preliminary investigation indicated Chordas was entering the roadway from a driveway while McLain was traveling southeast on state Route 79 toward the hamlet of Chenango Forks when the collision took place. The highway was closed for nearly three hours after the crash, and was reopened to traffic shortly before 10 a.m.
