Former federal MP Kerryn Phelps has dropped out of Sydney's lord mayoral race, citing a family member's health. Cr Phelps ran as an independent to win the seat of Wentworth at a by-election in 2018 after former prime minister Malcolm Turnbull retired but lost to Liberal Dave Sharma at the general elections the following year. The independent councillor launched a bid to dethrone Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore in February, saying the city's leadership had "grown stale" after 17 years.
