People will gather in San Francisco waiting for the biggest Fireworks Show of the year. Its been months in the making and as abc7 News Reporter Jonathan Bloom found out, it really puts the tech in pyrotechnics. They are the same wooden racks, the same plastic tubes. What are you doing with the tubes . Im just cleaning out last years debris. But this year something is different. Im actually dedicating the show to al souza, who passed away earlier this year. He was my mentor and he kind. Started the San Francisco fireworks way back when. This of in those days they used steel mortors and stand them upright and load them by hand. Some of our shows this year will be lit with a this show is one of the higherend shows. It will be fired with a computerbased firing system. And keeps the fireworks in perfect time with the music. And keeps the technicians a save distance away. You stand behind the pillar or inside the cockpit and then you are pretty safe. But being computerized doesnt mean the show is easy to set up. There are 10,000 fireworks that need to be carefully unpacked, loaded into the right tubes and, yes, wired to go off. Each firework has a number and a name. 348. It is a the round top up top is where all the sparkles are. This is the lift charge and this is where the gunpowder sits there in there. Each one is a little different. These are the pales going up or they whistle. And safety always comes first. Later we foil them so if burning debris falls in the tube it doesnt fight. I havent had a hot dog in a really long time, but im really hungry and that looks so good even hearing the ridiculous number of hot dogs that he consumes. I always go for funnel cake. That sounds good, too and maybe a good day to go to the fair to do just that. Exactly. And we also have a fair in the north bay, as well. It should be pretty nice weather. In fact good planning with the cool down the past couple of days. That continues throughout the week ahead. Heres a look at live doppler 7hd where the fog is with us this morning. We even have drizzle at the coast. And the fog will be clearing for most of the bay area today. Not everyone though, will see the sunshine. Look at san jose. Right now 58 degrees in San Francisco. Mountain view at 64. San jose kind of a muggy 63 right now. 57 morgan hill. Half moon bay good morning to you, 57 degrees. And the airport is cloudy this morning. Temperatures ranging from the upper 50s novato, napa, santa rosa to 61 with the clear sky out had concord. We do have clouds of that moved into livermore. And later on today looking at the warmer numbers here, of course around mt. Diablo, but the skies will be clear and temperatures topping out near 90 degrees. The drizzle at the coast, you may need your wipers. We have fog in berkeley and oakland. Mild to warm for the Holiday Weekend. A cooler pattern is shaping up. The marine layer is about 2,000 feet deep. It ramped up from about 1500 feet yesterday. With that we get the slower clearing, about three to five degrees will be shaved off of our afternoon highs today. And thats compliments of this area of low pressure that is sitting off the coast. So weve got a counter clockwise flow and that is feeding into the marine layer allowing for a healthier sea breeze today. If you are by the coast things wont change too much a couple of miles from the coastline you feel a little bits more of a breeze. And temperatures will be fairly similar here but we get the differences as we travel around the bay. So Half Moon Bay 63 degrees. Cloudy skies. San francisco, the eastern half, will be sunny at 67 by 3 00 in the afternoon. Coming down today in oakland to 73 degrees. Nice looking afternoon. It gets warm toward walnut creek but not as warm as it has been. 90 degrees. You head out toward the delta, southwest wind gusting to near 30, 35 miles an hour allowing for the cooler air to filter in here for a high of 92 today. And in the sierra nevada, we have had that unstable air a lot of showers and thunderstorms. Low 80s today a break tomorrow about 82. Monday another chance of thunderstorms will be widely scattered. High about 80. In and around the bay very pleasant with 60s coastside. Mid80s toward santa rosa and napa. 893 san jose. Low 80s overview in fremont. About 80 in hayward and heres a look at your 4th of july holiday forecast. Clear skies inland around danville and pleasanton, santa clara valley. Here are the clouds typically along the coast clear 39, the embarcadero across the bay. But a good show. They always know how to put it on in San Francisco. Look for 60s in the east bay and even 70s by the delta. Cooler 50s in the north bay for the fair up there and then on the peninsula look for the partly cloudy skies. So look at the milder numbers toward napa and santa rosa early on, but look at san jose and redwood city holing into the upper 60s early in the evening. The accuweather forecast thecology trend continues for the second half of your weekend, taking us through the middle of the work week will low 70s around the bay low to mid80s inland. Law enforcement officials are on how alert nationwide this Holiday Weekend due to concerns about possible terror threats. Warnings are common around major american holidays but in light of recent terror attacks abroad and the growing threat from isis, officials arent taking any chances. One reason for the concern is the way isis has used social media in an unprecedented way to bring in new recruits at home. What isis is doing is radicalizing people who live here in the United States of america. Our nation is under threat, our Law Enforcement and military are under threat. Officials are urging americans to stay vigilant. If you see something, say something. At the same time, they say its still safe to enjoy the Holiday Weekend with family and friends. 6 31 is the time. Last year the outlet mall attracted 7 million visitors. The grand opening is scheduled for august 13th. Depending on where you live, you could see a higher electricity bill in the coming months. Public Utilities Commission has approved a plan that raises rates on more efficient users while giving a break to big energy users. Lyanne melendez has what to expect. She wonders if she can afford living in pricey San Francisco. Any increases in her power bill will make it harder. Its really challenging. Thinking about another increase in costs, thats very frustrating. The new Pricing System will benefit customers who live inland where its hot and they run their airconditioners longer. For years they have complained that the rate system favored people along the coast. They have the advantage of being frozen in tier one and cooler coastal climates and smaller families. San francisco and other coastal cities will see the impact of the new system, but the valley and some east bay citizens will benefit from it. For years the Energy Company used a four tier Pricing System. Once you used whats allotted to tier 1, you move on to the next tier where the price per kilowatt is higher. If you reach tiers 3 or 4, your rates for that power increases dramatically. But under the new Pricing System the highest power users will get a break by paying less than they have. In order to balance things out those who consume less will now see a slightly higher power bill. The Utility Reform Network calls it unfair. And that is what we think makes no sense, is completely unfair. We think customers should be rewarded for saving energy, not punished. Many in San Francisco say this is far from a compromise. The people who use the most should pay the most, as far as im concerned. Just like water usage. The three major Utility Companies in the state including pg e, can begin increasing their rates in 60 days. In San Francisco, lyanne melendez, abc7 news. Aspiring students who apply to the universities of california will see a new feature on the undergraduate application. The voluntary threequestion survey will ask questions to share their gender identity and sexual orientation. The memorial will be located outside the gates of the San Francisco National Cemetery in the presidio and it will overlook the golden gate. We have the story. Take a stroll through the National Cemetery. A place where changes happen slowly and tend to happen permanently. On this day a reason to celebrate the fourth of july. I see it as a good day for our country. If retired marine colonel john stevens looks familiar, its because weve been following him for years as he tried to establish a Korean War Memorial in the presidio National Cemetery. As he told us last year we need to have people know about wars so we can hopefully prevent wars in the future. Now that memorial is on the cusp of reality. Stevens, along with a retired judge and a former marine stood by a sign marking the spot where next week they will break ground. For those who foughtrean conflict, the new memorial is long overdue. Of the more than 30,000 graves in this cemetery, 2,273 of them belong to korean war veterans. This is called the forgotten war because i dont think history gives it the kind of attention it should. It was the United Nations action in which a million koreans died and more than 33,000 americans. Finding the land, raising the money, took john stevens and these men years. It was a good project. It also kept me out of the house. So said the man who took a lot of ground in korea. But he said this is much smaller and considerably more symbolic. At the presidio National Cemetery in San Francisco, wade wayne freedman, abc7 news. The city of cupertino cancelled tonights fireworks celebration after learning the show would come with a big water tab. Due to the extreme drought conditions, the city would have had to pay more than 100,000 to spray water on the field to prevent damage. Despite the fireworks cancellation cupertino will still have live music, food trucks and a childrens parade later today. San francisco is celebrating in more ways than one. The gear is gearing up for a Fireworks Show. Last year there was a decade of budget cutting and recession. The fireworks sparked a spirit of renewal in the city, but budget cuts and Staff Shortages made it hard to spend money on the event. So the rotary club stepped up to the plate and they are funding the show once again. We have a full list of fireworks and festivities around the bay on front page of our website abc7news. Com. It will certainly be a busy weekend across the bay area as people head out and stake their seats later this morning for the events happening later tonight. Definitely u need to bring the jacket if you are heading downtown. Really no big surprises. If you have an idea what it is usually like downtown and inland this holiday, you are probably right. We have 90s forecasted for the east bay. Thats cooler than youve been ask clouds and fog at the coast and locally around bait for the fireworks celebrations. But some areas definitely will be clear. We will get to that in just a mommy. A beach shot for you down around the boardwalk in santa cruz where it is cloudy. We have just a halfmile visibility up the road in Half Moon Bay. Temperatures are running from the upper 50s to the mid60s. So depending on where you are feeling a little muggy. You may have some mist and drizzle and need to use your wipers. Mt. Tam higher elevations, of course, above that 2000foot marine layer who sits at about 2600 feet, you have the sunshine and temperatures today will be feeling pretty good. But if you are in and around the bay when the fog begins to pull back, it will get a little breezy at times. 57 in novato right now. 59 fairfield. And certainly throughout the Richmond San Rafael bridge and golden gate bridge, some dense fog. Clear this concord and in livermore we have clouds in the low 60s. And speaking of our east bay, this is mt. Diablo. We will look for a nice afternoon here. Pretty typical with some 90s. Not everyone will have 90s. But we will run the a game muss today with the drizzly coast. This morning fog around the bay. Clear sky inland, mild warm over the Holiday Weekend and a cooler pattern shaping up beginning today. 3 to five degrees cooler and even more significant cooling tomorrow. Then we kind of stabilize into the middle of next week. So one of the the culprits is an area of low pressure often the coast. This has loud for the marine layer to get caller and move further inland. So at about 2,000 feet deep we have the clouds from oakland and sneaking into the Livermore Valley. We will look for a sunny and pleasant afternoon. But with that sea breeze along the coast. So statewide it has been a little unsettled in the sierra nevada. Today no exception. 04 yesterday in lake tahoe. Today you could see a couple hundredth with a renegade shower or thunderstorm. 98 yosemite. 70 montreal ray. Looking 103 in fresno and sacramento still hot at 97 degrees. The week ahead in san jose with low 80s today. Nice afternoon. And then tomorrow you will notice temperatures still in the 80s with 70s as you go through next week. Mid70s wednesday, thursday and friday. So theres a cooling trend for the south bay, the santa clara valley. Elsewhere 89s today in concord. Look for 73 in oakland. 76 san mateo. 81 palo alto.
