On the small island of barbuda, the Prime Minister says some 90 of the islands buildings are destroyed. In puerto rico, potentially the worst storm to hit the island in a century. Now florida is gearing up for direct hit. Never had a cat five, never experienced it. Its just scary. Reporter the florida keys are under a fullscale evacuation. Its so large were hoping it doesnt follow us if we leave. Reporter highways are gridlocked. This is what interstate 75 looks like right now. Reporter at the airport, its a mad crush to get out. Even higher once we make our move further off to the north turks and caicos islands. And thats going to be as we venture into late thursday, today, and as we venture into thursday night. Into the upcoming weekend, notice the path to the north and west. You need to focus on the cone here, and this is expected to be a major hurricane as we go throughout the next several days. That track is about 175 miles. So florida and the carolina coastline, but most likely scenario, eastern florida. Big impacts here. Were talking about damaging winds and heavy flooding rains. Were going to start things off with the latest update on Hurricane Irma now passing north of puerto rico. You can see on the satellite its extremely strong winds are battering the u. S. Territory. The category five storm is moving westnorthwest and is still on track to hit south florida this weekend. Irma is pounding puerto rico with powerful wind and rain. Nearly a million are without power and 50,000 without water. This is the strongest hurricane to hit puerto rico in nearly 90 years. Nearly every building on the island of barbuda was damaged when the eye of the storm passed right over. About 60 of the residents are now homeless. The Prime Minister called the island, quote, barely inhabitable. The eye passed over st. Martin shared by both the dutch and french. St. Martins was devastated. A visitor called the storm apocalyptic. As soon as the windows and door frames busted open, we hit the storm bunker. And had to hold the door down all night. It was very scary. I think the winds might have been around 200 Miles Per Hour. We had a hurricane shutter from the windows. First those got ripped off and half a second later, this sliding door window got ripped out. We ran for it. I was feeling the winds beating us in the room. When we got to the storm bunker, i couldnt speak. We were so scared. We all feel really blessed to be here for sure. The island has no electricity or Drinking Water and it has very few buildings Still Standing everything the latest estimate is 70 are destroyed. Irma expected to go north and take aim at florida. Then the projected path spread out. It appears the hurricane runs up the coast and impacting georgia and the carolinas next week. Operations are being shut down in miami but at least two airlines are helping people leave. Jetblue is offering 99 flights. If you can still get a seat. Some routes for amtrak will terminate in jacksonville today and all are canceled fort weekend. People in the keys are known for toughing out storms, but not this time. Abcs gio benitez is there. Reporter florida keys under a fullscale evacuation. The track now has it forecasted to impact the keys on sunday. Reporter some 80,000 residents live here full time, and many, including elizabeth, are heeding that warning. Ive been through george, andrew, but im not staying for irma. Reporter julia keeping a close eye on Weather Report and stocking supplies. Were planning to stay until the friday update to see where that things going to go. If its bad were going to get out of here. Reporter tourists already told to leave. Drivers rushing to fill their tanks, facing long lines and shortages. This is what were seeing all over the florida keys. Out of service, and chair after chair blocking gas pumps. With one road in and out of the keys, Authorities Say it could be dangerous to wait. If you stay, you think youre a tough guy, youre on your own. Were not going to put ourselves at risk. This one is very different. I have never seen people take a hurricane so seriously. Reporter if tourists dont get out now, they may not be able to get help because there is one road in and out of the area. The average key is six feet above sea level. This is a lot less, so flooding is a major concern here. Gio benitez, key west florida. Forecasters are certain that irma will hit the keys, but where it goes next is not so clear. It has already done destructive damage through barbuda. We have never seen a hurricane since the modern satellite era in the 60s that has maintained this intensity this long. Devastating impacts throughout northern hispaniola. S as we go through the day this turns toward the turks and caicos and later on this weekend well see this make its move to the north and the west. And, again, the most likely scenario does paint a picture for eastern florida, but you do need to keep in mind that is there cone. There will be impacts as we go down the line. Floridas governor is warning that irma is stronger than andrew in 1992. How does it compare . He is absolutely correct in terms of wind speed and pressure. This is more intense. At this stage rate now as im talking, this has winds of 185 Miles Per Hour. Andrew, a little below that. Very damaging. But this is more intense right now. Justin, thank you very much. Overnight they have seen strong winds and heavy rain. More than half of puerto rico is without power. And it may be months before everything is restored. It is rare. The last time we had it was in 2010. You see it about every nine or ten years. Its unusual but not unprecedented. It starts in the middle of august. Weve had harvey and irma. And we a jose and katia joining the litany. Very active over the past several weeks. And irma has been doing incredible damage. Its an incredibly strong, powerful hurricane. One of the strongest hurricanes weve ever observed in the atlantic basin. In the wake of harvey, now seeing irma breaking records before the storm is anywhere near over. How do you explain the strength of the storms . How does Climate Change fit into this . And is there any other read on a cause for this in. Caller we havent had that much storm activity. Most of the storm activity has been later, in october. But this year, with irma, this form is incredible. Its shattering all kinds of records. Most get strong in the western caribbean. This got strong in the caribbean. This one got strong east of the leeward islands. 185mileperhour winds that far east, this is the first time. Are we going to create a category six as we see more of these stronger storms . Until last year, we hadnt seen a category five. Since 2007. Certainly this storm is not rewriting the intensity scale, but its more how long lived its been. Its the longest time weve had a storm this long. Its 36 hours now this strong. Is there any idea how long this season could last . It seems like the lines that were once pretty clear are getting increasingly blurry. Caller typically, the official end date is november 30th. By the end of october usually the seasons done. Weve had two hurricanes make landfall in november. Typically the season peaks around september 10th. Then it starts to get a little quieter, but the large scale conditions this year are conducive for active season. We have three hurricanes out there now, the models are showing another one maybe in the next ten days. Hopefully the rest of the storms that form this year will not impact any land masses. It safely made it from puerto rico to jfk in less than three and a half hours, and while the idea of being in a storm like this while in flight sounding terrifying, experts say its really no different than flying through a big thunderstorm. Were they flying above in go they say it was a bit bumpy, a bit rainy and dark, but they got through it. Go the airport in st. Martin, the very famous airport where tourists hang onto the fence as the planes come over the beach, that airport is now almost completely destroyed by irma. Weve had reports from tourists on the island calling the scenes apocalyptic. The baggage hull, everything is is destroyed. Unclear how they can come back from that. A good morning to you all. We begin with irma, one of the most powerful Atlantic Hurricanes ever is ripping its way across the caribbean. Nearly every building on the island of st. Martin has been damaged or destroyed. And is there no Drinking Water or electricity. On the french half of the island, at least six people are dead. The famous lowflying airport in the dutch half is gone. Irma has strong winds and rain and extends out from the center of the storm. Abcs linzie janis is there. Reporter nick and diane, eye of Hurricane Irma just passed us near san juan, about 50 miles to the north off the coast, a little further away that it was predicted to come. But we just now feel safe enough to come outdoor, because we have been experiencing sustained winds of 55 Miles Per Hour with gusts of up to 70 Miles Per Hour. We have seen objects flying, trees falling, transformers popping. Theres a lot of concern about rain. There is a predicted 20 inches in some areas. But Hurricane Irma has already devastated parts of the caribbean. At least three people are dead. Authorities in barbuda and st. Martin report more than 90 of those islands are damaged or destroyed. Cars seen floating through the streets. Buildings shredded. Terrified tourists riding out the storm. Irma ripping through the u. S. Virgin islands. Accuweathers Justin Povick is tracking the storm for us. Whats the latest . Were looking at a very powerful hurricane like you said. Wind speeds here, 180 Miles Per Hour. Impacts will continue to decrease for puerto rico but increase throughout day from northern hispaniola. Winds could exceed hurricane force. Major impacts at the turks and caicos with a dangerous storm surge and flash flooding with mudslides. We venture into the weekend, notice that bend to the north and northwest. Most likely scenario, it makes its move to northeastern sections of florida. Anywhere in the cone here, you need to take that seriously, but even areas to the north. Regardless, it is going to be a major hurricane throughout its life cycle. And mandatory evacuations are under way in the keys, understandably so. Its causing a traffic jam on that road. Most visitors to the keys have already cleared out. But some of the 80,000 residents are staying at least four to board up homes and businesses. Others are stocking up on supplies, insisting they plan to ride this storm out at home, hoping they can protect their property. Miami dade officials have ordered mandatory evacuations for lowlying coastal areas and warn that more evacuation orders could come later today. But that creates even more problems, because already a quarter of miamis gas stations are running out of fuel. Alex perez is there. Reporter a rush on gas across florida. Desperate residents waiting to fill up. Nothing you can do. Reporter pumps drying up. More than 25 of gas stations in miami dade out of fuel. At grocery stores, even more lines. The utter devastation that hurricane andrew brought to the state 25 years ago, etched in memory for so many.
