The eye of the storm with its sight on the florida keys and tampa. The National Weather service tweeting this is as real as it gets. Nowhere in florida keys will be safe. We are running out of time. The storm is almost here. If you are in an evacuation zone, you need to go now. More than 5. 6 Million People have been asked to evacuate. Many of them living low lying coastal areas. As time runs out, people are still trying to escape the storm. Traffic so bad on the routes out of south florida, some abandoned their cars because theyve run out of gas. Those trying to get out by air finding themselves stuck. Ft. Lauderdales airport closed. Miami international suspending all flights. Those who try to get in hoping to get a last minute ticket stranded and bussed to shelters. I was trying to find flights and its just been awful. We havent slept. Some miami beach residents are counting on their storm resistant structures and are staying put. We have water to ride out, days of electricity and we have you know hurricane proof housing. Weve heard the warnings from governor scott. Youve mentioned the warnings from the National Weather service, but what about the people who have decided to stay in south florida . So many are wondering how with are they planning to stay safe. Weve spoken to some of them. They tell me that they feel as though theyre in newer homes and structures where they can be safe. Homes that will protect them from hurricane winds and rain and also higher up off the ground. They feel their homes wont get swallowed up by a storm surge, which is a big threat here in south florida. There are other people who have boarded up their homes, their businesses and if they werent able to evacuate the area completely, they have gone to a shelter where they can stay safe there.
