Traffic along highway 101 in San Francisco is running smoothly this morning. This wasnt the case on one of the busiest travel days of the year. A tragic crash yesterday afternoon blocked driver at the height of rush hour on the southbound side of the freeway near cesar chavez. The response and cleanup took more than four hours as drivers were funneled from just two lanes. Abc 7 News Reporter lonni rivera has more. Reporter from sky 7, traffic barely moved for hours during rush hour along highway 101. The backup began at 4 00 in the afternoon when a dump truck southbound near cesar chavez flipped on its side, striking a muny bus. The collision involved the to a for right lanes. Reporter the driver of the truck died on scene despite the frantic attempt by First Responders to save him. At least five passengers on the muny bus suffered nonlifethreatening injuries. Drivers heading home or out of town spent up to two hours in traffic. The gridlock backed up all the way to San Francisco and into several east bay cities. Use 280, possibly to the airport, and expect that also even after the lanes are all open, theres going to be some residual delays. Reporter even drivers who left early made it to sfo late. It was bumper to bumper pretty much from 580 in Castro Valley all the way through til we got off on the exit here on the 101. Reporter the freeway was packed with vehicles. Chp investigators talk to some of the drivers who saw the crash. Theyre hoping they can help with the investigation. Lonni rivera, abc 7 news. In oakland a man and woman are in the hospital recovering from a vicious dog attack. Nicole kennedy suffered terrible wounds to her head and in case and a broken leg after two pitbulls attacked her. The dogs also mauled a man who ran to help her. Witnesses say the dogs escaped from a neighbors yard and killed kennedys sharpei mix before attacking her. Animal control has confiscated those dogs. The chp in santa rosa is scouring streets and parking lots to find a pickup truck that was stolen from a north bay fire victim. They posted these pictures of the blue 2003 ford f150 that belongs to a man whose home burned down in santa rosa last month. Investigators say it was taken from a hotel in windsor where the man is staying and this is the last thing he needs in his life. The truck has a california license plate. The busy Holiday Shopping season is upon us. This is a make or break time of year for Small Businesses, but shoplifters are biting into profits. At abc 7 News ReporterKatie Marzullo explains, Business Owners arent going to take it anymore. A good 10 of loss every year. Reporter she says its an understatement. She says shoplifting is on the rise. Lately shes been encountering professional thieves. A lot of them befriend you, are very sweet to you, and you think they wouldnt do that to a Small Business owner. Reporter shes told her employees never to confront a shoplifter. Shes worried for their safety. The owner of redemption has taken a different approach. Ive walked the street a couple of times, ive confronted people a couple of times. Theyve sa i have said, look, we have you on camera, you can give us back the item now, dont come in again. Reporter he says theyve had thousands of items stolen. Not only has he gone after people in person, he posts photos of shoplifters on social media. He hopes it sends a message. We dont want to be seen as an easy target. Organizers want this to look nice, like a retail experience. Theyre asking people to donate tables and shopping bags. Neighborhoods all over santa rosa will have giveaways. Junior college, montgomery village, and more. The women realize that people are living in temporary housing or hotels without much storage. Something to make you feel like you have a home, you know, even art. We have people that have donated art. Reporter the plan is to do this again once homes are rebuilt. Happening today, hundreds of volunteers in san jose will sort and pack boxes ahead of sacred hearts thanksgiving turkey distribution. Starting monday, more than 4,000 families will receive holiday food boxes from Sacred Heart Community service. You can donate frozen turkeys and canned foods. Crews will be taking down the road closed signs on Morgan Territory road in clayton at 5 00 tonight. The twolane road suffered considerable damage from the storms last winter and has been closed for months. In fact for a time the road was slipping up to a foot a day. Repair work began in july. Oakland city leaders are making sweeping changes as we approach one year since the deadly ghost ship warehouse fire. Abc 7 news was in oakland as the mayor and other city leaders announced reforms to prevent the same type of tragedy from happening again. The city is adding more fire and building inspectors, adding outside help to clear inspection backlogs and bringing the fire and building inspection database onto a single system. The effort includes multilingual outreach to tenants. Weve put together notices that are also getting word to the tenants because a lot of this is really about communication, not just to the owner. Making sure the residents in these buildings and facilities are aware of actions pending and of resources that they have. The oakland Warehouse Association has voiced some concerns about seeing more evictions as a result of the reforms. St. Anthonys needs your help, theyre accepting donations of food and lightly worn clothes. You can donate through thanksgiving day. In the south bay, Second Harvest food bank is collecting turkeys for families this thinking. They still need to reach their goal of 24,000 turkeys. They must be donated by monday. Monetary donations also help. Second harvest has three locations where you can drop off goods. Two centers are in san jose, one in san carlos. Check the hours for each of the centers before going.
