All the screen can wreak havoc on your commute tomorrow. Good evening. Im eric thomas. Im dion lim, thanks for joining us. It is relatively calm now but the biggest storm of the season is coming. A live picture from mt. Tam. Tomorrow this shot will be bouncing up and down in the wind. Drew tuma . Live doppler 7 is tracking rain. Take a look at this. When it gets down to street level, live doppler 7 showing you from burlingame to san mateo, live doppler 7 showing you light rain. South slide to palo alto, sunnyva sunnyvale, light sprinkles beginning to fall. East bay, similar from berkeley to oakland, emeryville, richmond. Some light sprinkles from 80 to 580. Inland light showers around benicia and martinez, approaching Pleasant Hill and concord. This is just the beginning of a storm system that will pack a punch. On the storm impact scale, this is a strong level 3 storm moving through here on monday. Heavy rain at times. Strong winds, especially monday evening. And there is some concern for flooding, especially over our burn areas. So the rush hour is the morning commute will feature light to moderate rain. So give yourself some extra time, especially for the evening commute. Pockets of heavy rain and very strong winds. Reporter crews have been installing flood barriers in hopes of keeping the waert out of the Apartment Buildings and businesses here. This area will be staffed round the clock until the storm is over. I dont know, i was shocked. I walked out, and they were there. Reporter kay walked out of his Apartment Building to find 120 plastic waterfilled barriers outside. 17s and fulsome is a notoriously lowlying area. While a 200 million drainage system overhaul is planned the socalled flood stop flood barriers are being put in place during heavy storms until then. We advise folks to elevate their belongings if they might be at risk for experiencing flooding. Make sure to call 311 if theyre experiencing any issues with their storm basins or flooding in their home. Reporter the San Francisco Public Utilities commission has been doing what it can to spread the word about keeping those catch basins clear. Crews have been trying to stay on top of them. Sfpuc has assigned nearly 2,000 of the citys 25,000 storm drains to volunteers, residents who committed to clearing them themselves. The department of public works has been gearing up for the approaching storm. Sandbags are ready to be distributed at its kansas and marin street location. Each resident gets ten for free. Beyond flooding, another concern is downed trees. Arborist crews or standby. We know in the first rains of the season, trees sometimes ar little more vulnerable to failure. Just because of the ground loosens up. So we might have some downed trees, especially if theyre going to be high winds. Reporter if residents spot a tree or limb that looks vulnerable to falling, theyre encouraged to call 311. In the meantime, storm preps are also under way in the south bay. Abc 7 news was in santa clara where the county is providing almost 200 more beds for the homeless as the rain arrives. Some of those beds are here at the bill wilson center. They are scheduled to be available for the next three nights starting tonight. The rain, some of the tree, we just cut it down but were not taking out the root. So keep the dirt from sleeping. Reporter mudslides are the biggest worry. Most of the vegetation was wiped out in the firestorm. These new signs now warn of the danger. The city is improvising with miles of these straw wattles for erosion control. Were waiting to see what happens, when the storm brings. Reporter lowenthal says the Santa Rosa Fire Department is on alert. It plans to monitor hillsides for any runoff. The dealership is set to close down for good on january 15th. And it opened back in 1925 and is currently on Stevens Creek boulevard. About 100 people work at st. Walcott couldnt afford to replace the vehicle she lost in a recent accident. I am able to work on so much more than i could have without a war car. Having my car totaled took everything from me. Its like christmas all over again to see the reaction to someone receive such a gift. Antioch mayor sean wright helped escort walcott to her new set of wheels. More raug go, walnut creek, oakland in the east bay, san ramon, light sprinkles falling. Into the north bay to novato to marin and san rafael. This is just the beginning of what will likely end up being the strongest storm so far we have seen this rainy season. Temperatures, numbers have not budged too far from where we were this afternoon, holding in the 40s and 50s at this hour. The call from accuweather overnight, the numbers areawide will drop into the 40s with light showers moving overhead just in time for the monday morning commute. So on the storm impact scale, this is going to be a 3, a strong storm moving in here on monday. Were tracking heavy rain at times along with some strong winds as well. And with that heavy rainfall does come the threat of some flooding, especially over our burn scars in the north bay. Perhaps even an isolated downpour. Certainly allow yourself some extra time tomorrow morning because the roadways will be slick. Thats going to be a theme for the first half of our monday. Later on in the evening, the evening commute is under way. Even heavier rain falling than wa what we saw for the morning commute. The evening commute could be even worse than the morning commute could be. Heavy rain, strong winds falling. Heavy rain continues by 11 00 monday night. Were still tracking those downpours. Not until the Early Morning hours on tuesday does the storm system begin to get out of here. But we do have a Flash Flood Watch in effect because of the threat of heavy rain in the north bay. Stretching from mill valley all the way up to clover dale and east into yountville and napa. A watch is different than a warning. A Flash Flood Watch means conditions are favorable for flooding. Tomorrow if a Flash Flood Warning is issued that means flooding is happening or will be happening, so you want to get to Higher Ground if that is issues. Well be tracking that for you right here. Rainfall estimates areawide, a healthy 1 to 2 inches of rain. Where we do see downpours develop, likely more than that. Well have to watch the rain in the south bay. Even san jose coming in with close to 1 inch of choice tour. Also strong winds. Wind advisory goes into effect, winds out of the south racing in the afternoon and the evening. Gusts could go 40 to 50 miles per hour. So the threat is there with that wind. Trees could come down and isolated power outages. Heres the accuweather sevenday forecast. The next seven days.
