Get up and get going. This is abc 7 mornings. Its sunday, february 11th. Good morning. Thanks for being with us. Im cries nguyen in for carolyn tyler. Heres meteorologist lisa argen here tracking the weather for us. Live look outside. You can see the sunshine and also clouds in the distance there. East bay numbers are in the 40s. A chilly start out there with the winds backing off. Were going to see a cold morning. But by the afternoon, temperatures in the low to mid60s. The winds pick up along the shoreline. In fact, gusty. 57point rays, 63 in fremont and in San Francisco today, just about 60 degrees. Ill be back with a look at the extended outlook which includes a bit of a warmup. Lisa, thanks. This morning, developing news out of russia. 71 people are dead after a passenger plane crashed near moscow. The plane took off earlier morning only to disappear from radar minutes later. First responders found debris across a snowy field. A russian government officials says there are no survivors. The flight was headed about a thousand miles southeast of moscow. The plane reportedly belonged to an airline thats a russian commercial carrier. This morning, federal investigators are looking into a Helicopter Crash in the grand canyon that killed three people. The rough terrain and weather complicated the rescue mission. Abcs Marci Gonzalez is in las vegas with what she learned about the helicopter companys safety record. Images of that helicopter in a ball of flames after crashing in the grand canyon. The desperate operation to rescue the survivors. Officials saying seven people were on board, three killed. You can see rescue crews battling treacherous rocky conditions. These harrowing images from a tourist on a different helicopter exploring the canyon. A witness describing the scene. I saw helicopters making a couple weird turns like it was going to land but i never seen that type of landing before. It tilted, went down between mountains, tail broke off and it crashed. I heard the one big boom and then probably about five explosions after that. It burst into flames. It happened just at sunset saturday near quartermaster canyon. The helicopter a euro copter made by airbus. The tour company, path lon airways, advertising a day of adventure touring the majestic sites of the grand canyon. It fliez 600,000 passengers a year. Images showing how difficult the area can be to navigate. Because of the ruggedness of the terrain, you cant just walk in to rescue the people or drive in. All rescues have to be conducted by aircraft. A search of the safety records revealed since 1996, at least 16 incidents in the region. Back in 2001, a helicopter returning to las vegas crashed killing six with one survivor. Its unclear what caused this crash. The ntsb and faa will investigate. Marci gonzalez, abc news, las vegas. Were learning more about a collision last night involving cal train on the peninsula. The Menlo Park Fire Department says no one was inside the car hit by a train at the fair oaks avenue crossing in atherton. The crash happened just after 8 00 p. M. The vehicle was dragged about a quarter of a mile down the tracks. It took crews about two hours to clear the debris. The car was jumped up against the front of the engine. More than 300 people were on the train. Thankfully, no one was hurt. This is the second time in four years that a car has been hit at that same intersection. A sightseeing trip on San Francisco bay went from smooth sailing to on the rocks. More than 40 people trapped on board were rescued yesterday. Passengers and crew members were heading out for a bird watching cruise when they ran into trouble. Lisa a mean ga leezian has the story. Passengers on the osprey, it was booked saturday by the Audubon Society for bird watching. Just ten minutes after leaving the Berkeley Marina during low tide, the boat ran aground. Chairs turned over and then the people picked themselves up and the boat starting listing in one direction. Very surprising. It took more than an hour and two small boats to safely rescue all the passengers. No one went into the water. They were able to get move the small boats alongside the ferry and they stepped from one vessel to the other. The ospreys two crew members refused to leave the boat. They stayed on board while the passengers regrouped on land. There were two minor injuries. But thats not why sara hirsch is upset. Upsetting, we didnt get to see the birds. This is their first trip out to see these particular birds. I was excited about it. Most passengers didnt panic at all. Quickly you realize that the water was only 7 feet deep. We realize that were pretty safe. It was an adventure. All of the passengers quickly left the marina. But it took nearly five hours to move the osprey to richmond. A vessel assist boat towed the osprey to this yard to check for possible damage. Lisa amin gulezian, abc 7 news. You might call them the lucky ones. Residents ever a Mobile Home Park whose homes didnt burn in the devastating wildfires. As abc 7 News Reporter Alyssa Harrington tells us, their luck and hopes of returning home may have run out. It is kind of creepy, isnt it . Pass crisco takes us inside the place she lived for 15 years. This is my where my memorabilia was. Her property is one of the few at the Mobile Home Park in santa rosa that survived the wildfires. But theres no electricity and the structure is red tagged. Rotten food in the refrigerator. Afraid to open it. Like many of her neighbors, shes been waiting for months to decide what to do next. Saturday they found out at a community meeting. They will not be rebuilding this Mobile Home Park. He made that very clear. Instead, the owners are bringing in burbank housing, a lowincome developer with plans to rebuild on the property. Pat says the honorable thing to do would be to buy them out. Were like prisoners here. We cant Insurance Companies wont cover these mobiles that are still standing. Were stuck. Many fire victims are on their final days of fema money. Michelle and her mother have been staying at extended stay a america across the street from her fencedin community. She comes back to feed the cats. We dont want to live in a concrete building downtown. These elderly people signed up for a yard. All my neighbors. We love our yards. We love to water every night. We love to have flowers. We like a little space in between us. Legal aid of Sonoma County is counseling many of the fire victims. A Santa Rosa High School heavily damaged in the north bay wildfires is in the National Spotlight today. The high school was damaged in october. Our Sister Network has a new feature, it follows the schools Football Team and goes through the sectional championship game focusing on some of the players who lost their homes. The program, called through the fire, will air at 8 00 p. M. On espn. New this morning, guide dogs in training are earning their wings. 25 puppies are in training this morning at Oakland International airport, part of helping the blind. Includes assisting when they fly. To be ready, the guide dogs are put through the entire airport experience with their handlers. That means they go to the checkin counter, pass through tsa sdreeng screening and check in at the gate. It doesnt end there. The dogs also board a plane, explore it, get off the plane and head to baggage claim. In the east bay, neighbors are getting a chance to weigh in about the future of oakland. Abc 7 news was downtown yesterday as Community Leaders and residents discussed a wide range of issues. Everything from land use and development to transportation and arts and culture. The session was facilitated to help shape the future of the downtown core. We can identify priorities for projects, for policies and programs for strategies, for specific places that we like to see developed a certain way. Also make sure that theyre inclusive. In fact, we will look for that recovery in terms of temperatures by the end of the week getting back out of our normal range for this time of year.
