Tonight firefighters are still working to extinguish a brush fire burning in napa county, the socalled american fire has burned more than 500 acres. It prompted an evacuation advisory and some neighbors rushed to keep their homes safe. Good evening. Im eric thomas. Dion is off tonight. Abc7 News Reporter liz kreutz is live near American Canyon with the latest on this fire. Liz . Reporter eric, the fire is burning in the hills behind us. Its 30 contained. There are crews here that are going to be working through the night. The good news, the evacuation advisory has been lifted, but we spoke to many people who live in this area and for them it was still a very close call. From the ground and from the air, firefighters work to put out the fastmoving american fire. We have several water tenders, dozers, two helicopters and at one time there was up to five fixedwing air tankers. Reporter the fire started around 3 00 p. M. I quickly grew in size with winds blowing famz toward American Canyon. What are some of the challenges today in battling this fire . Access. Mostly steep terrain, hill steep hills and canyons. Reporter the Vintage Ranch community was put under evacuation advisory. Meaning residents needed to be ready to leave at any time. Neighbors reggie and jonathan oh said at one point flames were so close they started to run. We started to run and we told everybody we need to go. Yeah. In 30 seconds. Its scary. My wife, my kids, my motherinlaw. I tell, go to the car. Reporter the fire started up in the hills and spread rapidly down to here. You can see how close those flames got to these homes. In some places, they got even further. This was he will where most of the damage happened here. Reporter he took us to his backyard and showed us how flames ignited by blowing embers came right up to his fence. You were hosing this down . I was hosing it down. Reporter they grabbed their hoses to try to put out the flames. He shared with us his Facebook Live which showed firefighters simultaneously assisting with air drops. They were handling fire down there. We handled this part here. Reporter a joint effort and ultimately a successful one. The firefighters were thankful to us, we were thankful to them. Things, you know it all happened good for the end. Reporter and those neighbors say they know they live behind a grassy field so theyve come together to talk about what they would do if Something Like this were to happen. Today it did so it just shows you it is good to have a plan. Now, there was a redflag warning in effect in this area this weekend, but it ended at noon today. Again, just over 500 acres burned at this point. About 526 acres, 30 contained. These crews will be working through tonight and into tomorrow. Live in American Canyon, liz kreutz, abc7 news. Im meteorologist drew tuma. Our fire danger will once again be on the rise mid week this upcoming week as winds will turn very gusty once again in our hills. In fact, these winds will likely be stronger than we saw over the weekend. So we have a fire weather watch. This will go into effect early wednesday morning and encompasses not only the north bay mountains. This also details the east bay hills as well. We could find winds gusting out of the north, northeast close to 45 Miles Per Hour combined. Not low humidity. Fires can start and easily spread. Communities affected under the fire weather watch, you can see elevations above 1,000 feet. Well take a much closer look at how strong those winds will get specifically and when that fire danger will lessen in our accuweather forecast in a few minutes. All right, drew, thank you. Now to a day of resilience and healing in santa rosa. Many survivors of the tubs wildfire are still rebuilding their lives, but today they took time to reflect back. Reporter there was music and lots of food and drink all to celebrate what could be the most Resilient Community in america. We ran downstairs, opened our front door to total chaos. Reporter may says shell never forget that terrible night. We lost everything, everything, everything was gone. Its just been a hell of a roller coaster. Two years. Reporter steve rahmn and his family survived the firestorm, but his home in coffee park was destroyed. This was steves house before the fire and this is his new home which should finally be completed by years end. This was more not as much of a celebration. I think two years now, there is more of a celebration, more of a lot more hope than there was before. Reporter more than 5,000 homes lost, but hundreds are being rebuilt. Neighbors from coffey park, mark west springs, and larkfield were all here. We all know what weve been through, and thats wet need a hug every once in a while. Their names are now part of a memorial outside the Luther Burbank center for the artsz. There are those out there who do not feel sonoma strong. They still feel the frustration of that night. They havent gotten anywhere. Reporter lisa frazee and others are still battling with their Insurance Companies over monthly Living Expenses which are set to expire this week. Our community is going to be devastated when these additional Living Expenses stop getting paid. People cannot afford to pay rent and their mortgage on their burnt property. The Homeowners Insurance on the burned problem and rebuild. Reporter californias insurance commissioner is getting involved asking Insurance Companies to consider extending those Living Expenses beyond tuesday, the twoyear anniversary of the fire. Pg e began turning off their power as a precaution to prevent wildfires. Outages affected customers in parts of butte, and yuba counties. Three arrests are made in connection with a shooting that sent three teens to the hospital following a High School Football game. The shooting happened friday night on september 27th after a game at de anza high in richmond. Teens were walking on morning side drive when shots were fired. Police have recovered a gun they believe was used in the shooting. Two of the victims have been released from the hospital. The three people arrested were also under age. A Sacramento Uber driver is in a coma after having a heart attack after he was attacked by a passenger with a knife. Police say 41yearold joseph mcvay fended off the rider. After he gave a statement to police, he had a heart attack. To make matters worse, the car he was driving was being rented from uber, they were charged for the car impounded by police for evidence. If they cant do anything to keep them safe, at least if something does happen to them, they need to have some financial protection for them. Uber released a statement saying they are doing what they can to support the family. Meantime his wife and two daughters hope he will pull through. Police have arrested the suspected attacker. Developing news in Southern California, a Restaurant Owner is being called a hero after an electrical transformer in an underground vault exploded during an oktoberfest celebration. Cell phone video captured one of the blasts. Whoa holy [ bleep ]. Last nights explosions injured two firefighters and three restaurant employees in the huntington beach. Firefighters say the Restaurant Owner had evacuated the restaurants dining area about 40 minutes before the blast after noticing a suspicious smell. Firefighters were called to check it out. There was like a ball of flame that came up and we thought it was like maybe part of the show. But then there was another one. They did not have any contact with the vault at all. They were just approaching the area when all of a sudden the first explosion happened. The Restaurant Owner was severely burned. The local utilit Southern California edison is working to find out what caused the explosions. Abc7 news was in San Francisco to check out the store front where gumps will be making a comeback even if its only temporary. Starting tomorrow the new owners will open a popup gump store at 250 post street in union square one block away from where the retailer closed last year. The elegant gift store closed last december after filing for bankruptcy. The new store is expected to stay open for about four months well. Air quality tomorrow, the poorest air quality prompting that spare the air day will be found in the inland east bay and the santa clara valley. However, closer to the coast line we will find better air quality. Along the coast, good air quality forecasted tomorrow. So if you have respiratory issues, you want to take it easy tomorrow in spots as the air quality will be on the decline.
