Good morning, america. Thanks for joining us on this sunday. We have a lot to get to as were just days away from the public hearings on whether donald trump will be impeached. We start with a developing weather story. This story can be summed up with three deeply unpleasant words, arctic airgir descending upon the eastern and central u. S. Hundreds of records are likely to break including some from the 1800s. This whole thing doesnt make me happy. Temperatures set to drop to nearly 30 degrees below average in many places. Oh, and theres snow on the way as well. We begin with meteorologist greg dutra from our chicago station wls. Greg is in for rob this morning. Good morning to you. Good morning. Weve been dealing with this in chicago for quite sometime. The party was over halloween there. At was left of it, is over. For a good chunk of the u. S. This arctic high is what were tracking, the slides in from canada. Down into the deep southern United States. Look at jackson, mississippis windchill value. This is early tuesday morning. 21 degrees. North of that from mississippi all the way north through the great lakes into new england. The bitter cold is here to stay for at least a couple days. Single digits above and below zero. Hundreds of records going to be broken including some record low daytime high temperatures, the coldest those afternoon highs have gotten. We have more on the snow coming up. Greg, we dont like what you have to say. We do like you. Welcome to the show. Thank you very much. Meanwhile in california, there was smoke rising over the mansions and movie studios of hollywood from a fresh wildfire. Abcs Marci Gonzalez is on that story for us. Reporter overnight, firefighters battling a new wildfire in los angeles. It was crazy. It just looked enveloped the entire side of the mountain. Reporter the barham fire burning more than 30 acres in the heart of hollywood. Flames raging across the street from the Warner Brothers studio. Some Production Companies and film crews evacuating. The fire spreading into griffith park. Plumes of smoke visible for miles towering over the iconic Hollywood Sign and downtown los angeles. It looked frightening. Like a rein real inferno. Reporter hot spots flaring up as crews battled the flames on the ground and through the air. This as california recovers from several destructive wildfires last month. The tick and getty fires forcing Mass Evacuations in the los angeles area. The kincade fire in Sonoma County charring nearly 80,000 acres, only fully contained days ago. But unlike with those fires, wind is fortunately not a factor this morning. Fire crews expect to make significant progress containing this fire today. Eva . Marci gonzalez for us. Now to the impeachment battle. The first public congressional hearings starting this week as republicans call for joe bidens son to testify. Abcs david wright is here this morning with more. Good morning to you, david. Reporter good evening, eva. President trump is spending a quiet day here in his hometown ahead of tomorrows veterans day parade. The battle lines are drawn when the house convenes public impeachment hearings wednesday. President trump insists he has nothing to fear from impeachment hearings. I dont care if theyre public. They should be public. What i said, it was misreported as usual. What i said is simple. There shouldnt be anything. There shouldnt be impeachment hearings is what i said. Reporter republicans have now made clear who they would like to testify, sending democrats a list that includes hunter biden, and the anonymous whistleblower. The ranking republican said the president should be afforded an opportunity to confront his accuser. But house intelligence chair adam schiff appeared to reject those two proposed witnesses. This inquiry is not, he said, a vehicle to undertake the same sham investigations into the bidens or 2016 that the president pressed ukraine to conduct for his personal political benefit or to facilitate the president s effort to threaten, intimidate and retaliate against the whistleblower. As it stands the first witness scheduled to testify is americas top diplomat in ukraine, william taylor. Behind closed doors taylor has already given some of the most damning testimony. He told the committee the administrations abrupt decision to freeze nearly 400 million in military aid helped russia and was harmful to Americas National security. He also testified that u. S. Officials negotiated an explicit quid pro quo. The money in exchange for arranging a hatchet job on the bidens. Quote, that was my clear understanding, Security Assistance would not come until the president of ukraine committed to the investigation. President trump has had this to say about taylor. Hes a never trumper. His lawyer is the head of the never trumpers. Theyre a dying breed but still there. Not clear he was a never trumper. Hes actually a former vietnam vet, and he was recruited to the job by the trump administration. Yesterday the president went to the alabama lsu game where he got loud cheers, quite the contrast to recent outings to the world series and the mixed martial arts match at Madison Square garden where there were boos and even chants of lock him up. Check this out. The baby trump balloon, well, in alabama a trump supporter slashed it. Yoithe oou. No sign theres a diminution in support for trump among his base supporters, alabama and other states like that. None in alabama. David, thank you. Whit over to you. And dan, the topic of impeachment in many ways, overshadowing policy messages from democrats on the campaign trail. I caught up with several candidates who continue to defend the process while acknowledging the political risk. On the eye of a historic week in washington the gravity of the impeachment inquiry looming large over tut not about me. Reporter former Vice President joe biden defiant amid calls from President Trump and republicans for both him and his son to testify in public hearings. Theres not a single solitaire scintilla of evidence anywhere that somehow i did anything wrong. So what trump is doing is what he always does, try to take the focus off what the problem is. Reporter of the 17 democrats running for president seven of them are currently serving in congress and could be called back to capitol hill to participate in the inquiry including senator Bernie Sanders who sat down with our rachel scott. Ill be doing my job when im there. Ill have to be in washington, d. C. And des moines, iowa and concord, New Hampshire at the same time. Ill do my best. Im sure, you know, well do what we have to do. Reporter but the tone somewhat measured among most of the president ial hopefuls bracing for potential fallout. Do you still worry that these public hearings, the inquiry is a distraction, and in some way, can hurt democrats politically . Some things come along that are so important that you have to put the political aside. I dont know what the political consequences of impeachment will be. I know what the moral and constitutional consequences would be if there were no accountability at all. Impeachment to me has the potential to be a real distraction because any opportunity we have to present a new positive vision for the country, thats what we should be doing. Reporter democrats hoping this cuts through the noise. As the president they wish to unseat, digs in for a fight. Tehas bee. Concerned about despite the impeachment inquiry grabbing headlines, many candidates say when theyre out there crisscrossing the country, its not the first thing voters are bringing up. Theyre mostly concerned about Kitchen Table issues, things that impact them, health care, economy, jobs. It was interesting. I was at an andrew yang town hall. I sat through and heard what people had to say, and not one person asked about impeachment. Its a telling detail. So much to talk about politically this sunday morning. Lets bring in our ringer, Abcs Martha Raddatz who is hosting this week. Shes down in washington. Martha, good morning to you. Lets start with this impeachment saga thats going to begin to publicly unfurl in washington on wednesday. Do you think the democratic president ial candidates are correct to wring their hands publicly about the fact this process could be a distraction, one that really ultimately could impair the partys odds of retaking the white house . I think its a distraction. It most certainly is. Its a very important event on capitol hill. There will be a lot of attention focussed on that. But indeed, people wont be following the race quite as much, and i loved hearing whit say that hes out there, and hes talking to people, and theyre not concerned about that. They want to talk about issues, but you can be certain reporters are going to continue to ask those candidates about impeachment, and how it is impacting the race. Theres very little time before iowa and New Hampshire. If these impeachment hearings go on and on and after the holidays, then they have to worry about refocusing their message. Of course joe biden is going to have to keep defending himself because President Trump and republicans keep bringing this up. And trying to get his son to testify. As we know, the democrats will try to make this a speedy process. Its been reported that the republicans may try to slow it down. So much going on on that front. Meanwhile, theres a lot going on internationally on your show this rn morning. Youre going to have the first interview with the new chairman of the joint chiefs of staff, general mark milley. You asked him about the president s controversial policy on syria. Lets listen to that. If i do my math and look at the new troops coming in and going out, it could be more than 700 who remain. There will be less than 1,000 for sure. Probably in the 500ish frame, maybe 600. Its in that area. Were not going to go into specific numbers because were still going through the analysis right now. As i understand it, the president has said he wanted all the troops out of syria. Are we hearing the military defy the president . I would absolutely not call it defying the president. I think general milley, chairman milley now is giving his best military advice. Its not necessarily that President Trump will accept that. Remember, there were 1,000 troops in syria, and he called for all of them to be removed, but there are troops in the south, and now the president himself has said he wants those oil fields in the east guarded in a secure viempenvironment, a that takes troops. That takes boots on the ground to do that, and theyre not going to leave those troops in greater danger. Theyre going to want to put the numbers in there that they think are best. What about the fight against isis . Thats what its about too. Chairman milley told me that. He said its all about the fight against isis, even guarding the oil fields. They want to keep them away from isis. Isis used the oil revenue to fund their terrorist tactics. Martha raddatz, great to see you. I want to remind everybody, martha has a big show this morning. Shes going to look ahead to the impeachment hearings and shell cover the latest in the 2020 race, and we just noted that exclusive interview with general mark milley. Its all coming up on this week.
