And some areas in the great lakes and new england are bracing of 6 inches to 10 inches of snow today alone. Robin. All right, alex, take care. We turn to ginger and youve been telling us its going to get worse before it gets better. We have at least two days we have to get through this severe cold and a lot of snow in some places. Were going to go to the white house now and new revelations from former u. N. Ambassador nikki haley. She writes in a new book former secretary of state Rex Tillerson and former chief of staff john kelly tried to enlist her to resist President Trump in order to, quote, save the country, an offer she refused. Terry moran has the details. Good morning, terry. Reporter good morning, george. You know, nikki haley is one of those rare high officials in the Trump Administration who left on good terms with the president even though she occasionally would criticize him, on charlottesville, on abandoning the kurds in syria, on his occasionally harsh rhetoric and she was always loyal and now revealing how that was tested by some of the people closest to the president. In her memoir out this week, nikki haley takes on former secretary of state Rex Tillerson and former white house chief of staff john kelly claiming the two men undermined and ignored President Trump from inside the white house. According to excerpts released by the Washington Post haley writes, kelly and tillerson confided in me that when they resisted the president , they werent being insubordinate. They were trying to save the country. It was their decisions, not the president s that were in the best interest of america, they said. The president didnt know what he was doing, she said of the mens views. According to the post, haley recounts that tillerson told her people would die if trump was unchecked but she refused to join their effort. They should have been saying that to the president , not asking me to join them on their sidebar plan. It should have been, go tell the president what their differences are, and quit if you dont like what hes doing, but to undermine a president is really a very dangerous thing, and it goes against the constitution. And it goes against what the American People want. It was offensive. Reporter as for President Trump, he was effusive when haley left office last fall. She is a fantastic person, very importantly, but she also is somebody that gets it. Reporter and the president is now tweeting, good luck, nikki, on her books release. Well, in a statement to the Washington Post former chief of staff john kelly said that if providing President Trump with the best and most open legal and ethical staffing advice so he could make an informed decision is working against trump, then guilty as charged. Nikki haley here really one of the most fascinating figures in the republican party. She clearly has future political ambitions maybe running for president , staying on good terms with donald trump is a good idea in this republican party. George . Theres been a lot of speculation about that. Okay, terry, thanks very much. Were going to go now to capitol hill now where the first public hearings on impeachment set for wednesday starting with william taylor, the top u. S. Diplomat in ukraine and george kent, the Deputy Assistant secretary of state followed by the fired u. S. Ambassador to ukraine, Marie Yovanovitch on friday all expected to detail an improper Pressure Campaign by President Trump as republicans release a list of witnesses they want to call. Our senior Congressional Correspondent mary bruce tracking it all on capitol hill. Good morning, mary. Reporter good morning, george. Well, as this impeachment inquiry enters the next phase this is now all about making a public case. Democrats with these hearings are looking to focus squarely on the president s actions to pressure ukraine while republicans are now looking to broaden the scope of these hearings. As capitol hill braces for public impeachment hearings this morning, fresh fights over who should testify. Well, i never even heard of some of these people. I dont know who they are. Reporter n wednesday, that first witness to come before cameras, the top u. S. Diplomat in ukraine, bill taylor. In explosive closeddoor testimony, taylor implicated the president in a campaign to pressure ukraine saying it was his, quote, clear understanding that ukraine would not receive nearly 400 million in Critical Military aid until they agreed rivals. Stigate trumps political this is a very strong case of bribery. The constitutions very clear. Treason, bribery or acts of omission, and in this case, it is clearly one of those. Reporter shifting tactics, some republicans are now condemning trumps behavior but say it doesnt rise to the level of impeachment. I believe it was inappropriate. I do not believe it was impeachable. Reporter but trump is not on board with that defense tweeting, republicans dont be led into the fools trap of saying it was not perfect but is not impeachable. Insisting nothing was done wrong and over the weekend, republicans put out their own witness wish list including joe bidens son hunter, and the anonymous whistleblower who sparked this inquiry. Its impossible to bring this case forward in my view fairly without us knowing who the whistleblower is and having a chance to crossexamine them about any vices that they may have. Reporter but democrats say thats not going to happen. The chairman leading the hearings, adam schiff, says it would be redundant and would only place their personal safety at grave risk. Eager to focus on trump, democrats are not likely to call hunter biden either. Schiff warning the hearings will not serve as vehicles for any member to carry out the shame sham investigation into the bidens. House investigators are still hoping to hear from two witnesses with firsthand knowledge, former National Security adviser john bolton and acting white house chief of stave Mick Mulvaney. Now the white house is trying to block them from appearing. Bolton seems willing to talk but is looking for the courts to decide whether he can comply and, george, in a surprise twist, Mick Mulvaney is now also looking to the courts to decide his next move here. Yeah, the question is how long that would take. Meantime, mary, that ukrainianamerican who was working with Rudy Giuliani indicted for some Campaign Finance violations now appears eager to testify against giuliani and President Trump. Reporter yeah, george, lev parnas is now willing to speak with congressional investigators and comply with a subpoena and this morning, the New York Times is previewing why he would be such a critical witness. His lawyer telling the times that parnas plans to tell house investigators he personally told ukrainian officials that they needed to launch an investigation into the bidens or else they would not receive millions in that Critical Military aid, george. That is exactly the kind of ultimatum that the white house and the president have been denying. Okay, mary, thanks very much. I know youll be joining our live coverage of the first impeachment hearings that starts at 10 00 eastern right here on abc and abc news live. Robin . Folks will be watching. Now overseas to chaos erupting in hong kong. Protests escalating to dangerous levels. Senior Foreign Correspondent ian pannell tracking the very latest. Good morning, ian. Reporter good morning, robin. Thats right. Really disturbing scenes and multiple the flash points in hong kong. Todays clashes came after the mysterious death of a protester late friday and has made an already tense situation there even worse. This morning, the protests in hong kong taking a new violent turn as Police Open Fire on unarmed demonstrators who have been fighting for months for political reform, autonomy from china and police accountability. We will have spent no effort in finding ways and means that could end the violence in hong kong. Reporter this officer wrestling with a man dressed in white, while another protester in a black shirt can be seen rushing towards them. The officer then turns and fires his weapon. Hitting at least one demonstrator who was rushed to the hospital in critical condition. Todays protests was dubbed operation dorm, targeting highways with blockades and vandalizing subway stations, in a sign of how violent this has become an argument with a passerby ends with him being doused with gasoline and set on fire. Police again firing off tear gas in the heart of hong kongs business district, sending panicked residents running to shelter indoors. Students are at the heart of this protest, and today at the hong kong polytechnic, barricades are tossed in the air while others douse them in gasoline attempting to start a fire in a standoff with police that shows no sign of ending. I have to say these are dangerous escalations now with both sides using more and more violence. You can bet the chinese leadership is watching this closely and, remember, beijing has already threatened that if the hong kong authorities cant control the situation there, then they will. Amy. Volatile indeed. Ian pannell, thank you. Turning now to apple under fire this morning for its new credit card accused of being sexist against women, giving them much lower credit lines than men. Rebecca jarvis is here, and rebecca, regulators are already launching an investigation. Reporter thats right, amy. Yeah, this is raising many eyebrows as some very highprofile individuals are calling out apple for what they say could be sexist policies with their new credit card. This morning, apple backlash. A credit card created by apple. Reporter the tech giant under investigation over allegations of gender discrimination. New york state regulators responding to complaints that apples popular new credit card, which uses an algorithm to assign credit limits, is favoring men over women. Including one of apples founding fathers, cofounder Steve Wozniak tweeting that compared to his wife i got ten times the credit limit. We have no separate bank or credit card accounts. The same thing allegedly happening to Software DeveloperDavid Heinemeier hansson. He says he got 20 times more credit than his wife who he says actually has a higher credit score than he does. Husband and wife applied for the apple card and husband ended up receiving ludicrously larger credit limits. Reporter the tech giant launched the card this summer touting it as created by apple, not a bank, and promising transparency. But now critics say the algorithm used by apples partner, Goldman Sachs, is anything but transparent. We simply were told this is ju how it is and you just have to accept that. Reporter Goldman Sachs responding in a statement writing, as with any other individual credit card, your application is evaluated independently. We look at an individuals income and an individuals credit worthiness. Adding, we have not and will not make decisions based on factors like gender. And the point here is also that if there is sexism, it can intentionally or unintentionally be a part of these algorithms. Keep in mind algorithms arent just determining credit limits in this case, they are determining credit limits in all cases helping employers sift through job applications and determining what you see online so think about this, amy. They are very, very powerful and we dont really at this point understand them. Its important to really understand what they do and how much theyre driving society right now. Transparency key in this. Yes. All right, rebecca, thank you. Were going to get the latest now on a possible breakthrough in the vaping crisis. The cdc has now identified a toxin that may have caused the deaths of 39 people and illnesses tied to ecigarettes across the country. Linsey davis is here with details. Good morning, linsey. Over the weekend, cdc officials said that vitamin e acetate is a potential toxin of concern calling it a strong culprit. The chemical compound was found in 29 biologic samples from patients with lung injuries associated with the use of thc and vaping products, including 15yearold zane martin. Its very bad. Dont vape unless you want to end up in the hospital. Reporter although its commonly used in lotions and supplements, Officials Say that inhaling the the oillike substance can be dangerous. Its important to understand that inhalation should be inhalation of air and not substances. Especially oils, because oils produce inflammation, pneumonia and over time with repeated use cause respiratory failure and death. Its been like looking for a needle in a haystack. I think with the latest announcements from the cdc, were getting much closer. The cdc says that the priority now is animal at this timing to learn definitively if vitamin e acetate causing lung damage when inhaled. Thank you, linsey. All right, this morning, were going to talk about the Dallas Cowboys with a new addition to the team. Take a look at this. Remember the black cat that appeared during the monday night football game. At that point they were losing to the giants but when the cat took the field the team turned it around. The team decided to make it their rally cat, adding it to the roster, but it turns out the cat might be bad luck after all.
