Its basically like any other house that you or i would live in. Were going to open it up, go right in. You can see that its got carpets in here. I want you to notice, this door is open, thats going to be important, and the door behind me is closed. Twobedroom house. Behind us is a living room, typical of anything you might see in the Holiday Season. You have a Christmas Tree here, television, candles, and these couches. I want you to notice these couches. In just a minute were going to light this on fire. Before we do, i want you to let everybody at home know were here with ul fire experts, philadelphia Fire Department, this is a live demonstration and a controlled scenario, okay . Steve is going to light it up. The fires starting to peak. I want you to see the smoke. Smoke goes up. Its all in this room now. [ fire alarm beeping ] what you dont see is Carbon Monoxide. Thats why those alarms are so important. Carbon monoxide is an invisible killer, youre not going to be able to see it. Now, notice that this door is closed. Its going to be important in just a few minutes. The room, i want to show you for one sec, its starting to cook right through that couch. Were getting low. Its cooking right through that couch. Reporter 400 degrees and the air is obviously unbreathable. Thats why in a situation like this youre going to want to stay low and go. The lower you are, the cooler it is, the cleaner the air is. There is a tunnel of clean air at the bottom and a funnel of smoke above us and its just coursing out of this house. Thats why you want to stay as low as possible. Its cooking. Were going to go to the other side. And again, im going to do something for the purposes of the demonstration. Nobody should ever do this at home. Everybody should just get out, then call 911. Were going to go back in here with steve. Now remember that room that had a closed door . This is it. I want you to notice at home, the smoke is coming in. The majority of deaths in house fires occur in the middle of the night. You might be sleeping. You wake up. You notice something is wrong. First thing to do, touch the door. Is it hot . Is the handle hot . If it is, do not, do not open this door. Keep it closed. Its your fire shield. Its going to keep you safe. Next thing you want to do, call 911. Now if youre in a house is when you want to call 911. You may hear bursting behind us, thats the fire surging out of that room right now. If youre in here, you want to stay low. Call 911. Firefighters are going to come and theyre going to do a perimeter around the house. This is the only time you should open the window. You want to let them know that youre here. What do you do . You open the window. Teddy bear, pillow, anything that might alert someone youre here, throw that out the window. Close the window. If you keep it open, its going to suck all that smoke in. If firefighter dozen come, then open the window again, otherwise stay low. Were going to head back out. Outside this door steve just said its 1,000 degrees. Dont open that door. Were going to go back out. A bunch of guys with a lot of safety gear on. Im impressed by my cameraman steve with us. Back it up. Theyre about to put this fire out. You can see its blown through the windows. Look how far it shot the windows away. And theyre starting to lower these doors. George, im going to take my helmet and gear off right now. This story is crazy, a man wielding a machete is now dead, a Police Officer hurt, after a drama played out in real life on the streets of hollywood. Police say first the suspect committed an Armed Robbery, then attempted a carjacking at a fast food drivethru, then took that vehicle, smashed it into two police cars. You can see from this video at one point he actually chased after an officer and that officer fell in the street, he went lunging toward him, and thats when other officers there opened fire at the suspect, killing him. That officer was treated at the scene. Were going to have a full report in our next half hour. Incredible there. Maryland has released three men from prison after 36 years for a murder they did not commit. Then 16yearolds, they were convicted of shooting another boy in an argument about a jacket. Their accusers recently recanted. Prosecutors say they may have been coerced and the police withheld evidence. The states attorney asked a judge to throw out their 1983 convictions.
