His 13monthold son dead. The toddler died after accidentally ingesting fentanyl which oneal had consumed. He died later at the hospital. U. S. Where these drugs were distributed in the openair drug market that exists in the tenderloin neighborhood of San Francisco. The tenderloin has tan tackles that extend into San Francisco. Reporter the tenderloin. In august the u. S. Attorney announced a federal initiative cracking down on its drug trade. 15 federal Law Enforcement agencies partnered with an equal number of federal prosecutors executing arrests in the neighborhood. In a letter to supervisor matt haynie, who represents the district, anderson said since august they made more than 100 arrests. 46 have already pled guilty. But anderson also pointed out the lack of collaboration with local authorities. Partly to blame, he said, the citys broad interpretation of its sanctuary policy. The way those policies are being applied in San Francisco is also resulting in sanctuary in some instances, perhaps immunity, for those engaged in criminalist conduct. Reporter mayor lunde breed says shes open to working with anders anderson, however crime happens no matter what, so to attribute to it a policy is i think unfair. Mayor breed says the city has to be careful when it works with federal agencies not to violate peoples civil liberties. Racial profiling she says being a big concern, among others. As i recall, the San Francisco Police Department is not a member of the federal joint Terrorism Task force either, i think thats right, and there was big controversy when they left that group . Former new york city mayor and president ial hopeful Michael Bloomberg kicked off or picked up stockton today, actually, he went there to kick off his Campaign Events in california. Why stockton . It has a high poverty rate and is need of affordable housing, two issues very important to bloomberg. Following that he was in San Francisco to talk about Climate Change with former governor jerry brown, who has not yet endorsed him. Lyanne melendez is live with details on his visit today. Reporter Michael Bloomberg came to San Francisco to sort of introduce himself as the environmental candidate. In Stockton Bloomberg was looking for acceptance. This morning bloomberg picked an unlikely city to launch his campaign, stockton, in the central valley. But seeking the endorsement of mayor Michael Tubbs may end up working in his favor, as reporters quickly homed in on the issue of bloombergs controversial stop and frisk policy while mayor of new york. His critics insist it unfairly targeted blacks and latinos. Look, we tried a lot of things. My whole focus was on reducing the murder rate. In looking back, certainly in the third term, it got out of hand and maybe i should have paid more attention. This man went to a black church with many parishioners who probably encountered stop and frisk and said, im sorry. Why do i think california would vote for somebody like me . Because californians understand, nothings simple, you have to have real solutions, and you have to have evolutionary and revolutionary change. Reporter bloomberg has been a staunch supporter of the environment. This afternoon he attended the American Geophysical unions conference in San Francisco, joining former governor jerry brown, who did not officially endorse him. Who is going to lead us for the next four years . Hopefully somebody who appreciates the importance of Climate Change. Mike bloomberg. Reporter as you saw there, clearly it was important for bloomberg to be seen with former governor jerry brown, who remains very popular in the state. Im live in San Francisco, lyanne melendez, abc 7 news. Bloomberg entered the president ial race very late in the season. Will it hurt him that he is skipping iowa and New Hampshire . Thats a question a lot of people wonder. Reporter thats right, and we did ask him about that. And he said hes not concerned. Listen, he did speak to president obama before and president obama told him that he visited iowa more than 90 times before the iowa caucus. So clearly bloomberg doesnt have the time, doesnt have the energy, to do that in such a short time. He will, though, focus, he says, on super tuesday, which comes after that. But i do have to say something, dan. And this is where hes coming from, and i want to quote him on this to get it right. He says, if i didnt run, i would never forgive myself if i didnt do something about it. Meaning, beating president trump. All right, thanks very much. Hes also doing a lot of ad buys. Sure, got a lot of money to do it. During bloombergs visit the Trump Campaign put out a statement which read in part, its only appropriate Michael Bloomberg is joining forces today with Governor Brown in San Francisco, a city thats seen the disastrous effects of the radical policies implemented by both former elected officials. We asked bloomberg for his response to that. You can say a lot of things about jerry brown, but not being a great elected official in california aint one of them. He was one of the best governors they ever had, and he was a good mayor too before that. Bloomberg is one of 15 Democratic Candidates hoping to win the president ial nomination. You can see their faces here. Fewer than half have qualified for the next debate. So far seven have made the cut for the next for next thursdays debate in los angeles. They are Vice President joe biden, mayor pete buttigieg, minnesota senator klobuchar, bernie sanders, tom steyer, elizabeth warren, and andrew yang. Tom steyer was here in the bay area today holding a town hall in walnut creek. He spoke and answered questions at the event hosted by the ross more democrats group. Steyer is a San Francisco resident did and a billionaire after years of running a hedge fund. He says his focus is on regular people. I really think thats the question in america today, how do we take back a government thats actually of, by, and for the people . Thats why im running for president. Tomorrow steyer will take part in a town hall in napa. Today joe biden was in las vegas where he held a town hall with casino and culinary workers, many of them immigrants. Biden vows to end forprofit Migrant Detention Centers that existed while he was Vice President. Other candidates have also made this pledge. The announcement is part of an immigration policy release today. Other priorities include ending family separations at the border and rolling back Trump Administration travel limits on citizens from certain muslimmajority countries. Andrew yang went doling in davenport, iowa. He did answer questions from voters and reporters including one about Campaign Finance transparency. You look at our list of corporate funders, its a blank spread sheet. Zero corporate pac money, zero agenda. To me that should be the standard of the democratic party. Yang took a shot at bowling, and he bowled a strike. [ cheers and applause ] in addition to those math pins and math hats, maybe he ought to do one for bowling. Thats a highrisk photo op, you could hit a gutter ball and look terrible, very nice. I guess bowlings down his alley. Oh man. Weather, which is down my alley, weve got light rain pushing into the north bay right now. Heavier, steadier rain developing offshore. So all parts of the bay area will likely get some wet weather out of this system. But at the moment its mainly a north bay event.
