First, oracle decided not to hold its annual conference in the city because of high costs and dirty streets. That will cost millions. Yesterday we told you businesses at pier 39 are saying the dirty streets are drivin tourists away. Many of you responded to that story by reaching out to us with your opinions. Lea spent the day reading through so many interesting comments. After reading some of those comments from viewers, it seems san franciscans have reached a tipping point. They want results, they told me. Many complained the city continues to increase its budget on services for the homeless, but theyre not seeing things improve as quickly as they would like. Pier 39 is one of the safest places in San Francisco because it has its own security. Its also impeck bly clean. Yesterday the president of sim coe restaurants said they are not getting the number of tourists they used to. In the past two years they had to hire a Marketing Team and a bus service that brings tourists to them. This way, she says, they avoid many of the problems of the city. So you step off the property at pier 39 and youre just faced with all of this. I think the city has to open their eyes and realize that something has to be done. Many of you agreed. A viewer gave us this feedback. San francisco has turned into a giant ghetto and the politicians said we voted for it. Another viewer told us the wine country is seeing the impact of the citys problems. One wrote to us, they, meaning the tourists, are just disgusted by what they see in the city and the cost and will never go back. Napa valley piggy backs on the sf tourism. If people stop coming, it will affect us too. On the streets we heard this. I thought it had gotten better. Other viewers didnt think it was fair for businesses to blame the homeless. Larry nelson also wrote to us, when businesses take the easy route with blame, its cheaper than the quality of some of their products. Blame is a shame. Give the homeless a job. This visitor from sacramento seemed to agree. We need to help our homeless. These are all opposing arguments that will continue as long as homelessness persist. I hear people saying they have a compassion fatigue towards the homeless. Mayor breed says she can fix it and that will work in her xaver obviously the homeless crisis is more than just people who lost their jobs and became homeless for o reason or another. There is really a much darker side to this, and that is of course mental illness, which we see in huge numbers out on the streets. Thats the biggest challenge in terms of how to address that part of this crisis. It is the biggest challenge by far. That drove it home for a lot of people. They saw it. What is the city doing . This past tuesday the board of supervisors voted to provide Mental Health care to those who need it and who are homeless. Theyre going to pour a lot of resources into that, but the second part of this is getting these people to realize that they have mental issues, mental problems, and the city knows it wont be easy. Huge challenge. Leann, thank you so much. Were always interested in your feedback. Go to our website, abc7news.
